Világsikerű könyvükben új megvilágításba helyezik eddigi elképzeléseinket a világ egyenlőtlen fejlődéséről. Tizenöt éves közös kutatásuk alapján arra a következtetésre jutottak, hogy a nemzetek társadalmi-gazdasági jóléte vagy elszegényedése elsősorban az intézményi, hatalmi struktúrától függ. Számos történelmi példát vonultatnak fel, a Római Birodalomtól kezdve a maja városállamokon, a középkori Velencén, a Szovjetunión, Latin-Amerikán, Anglián, Európán és az Egyesült Államokon át egészen Afrikáig, hogy igazolják új politikai gazdaságtani elméletüket. A történelmet, a politikatudományt és a közgazdaságtant remekül ötvöző, magával ragadó mű mindannyiunk számára tanulságokkal szolgál a fejlődés kérdéseiről.

Je autorem několika knih na ekonomická témata, mimo jiné další práce sepsané společně s Jamesem Robinsonem Economic Origins of Dictatorship and Democracy (Ekonomické kořeny diktatury a demokracie. James A. Robinson studoval London School of Economick, na Warvick University a na Yale. V současnosti přednáší na Harvardově univerzitě.

The Narrow Corridor

In this profoundly important follow up to their global bestseller, Acemoglu and Robinson provide a powerful new framework for looking at countries' development through the way that the state interacts with society. This conceptualisation - in which any country can be located on a simple diagram and its future predicted - is new and based on decades of their research. The power distribution between state and society affects how peaceful societies are, what types of institutions develop, how much oppression and fear people suffer, how their economies are organized, and how rich they are. Full of entertaining stories from the past (it starts with the wife of a Nigerian ruler fleeing Abuja with 38 suitcases of cash), Balance of Power sheds light on issues from the present and has practical political ideas for the future.

The Narrow Corridor

By the authors of the international bestseller Why Nations Fail, based on decades of research, this powerful new big-picture framework explains how some countries develop towards and provide liberty while others fall to despotism, anarchy or asphyxiating norms - and explains how liberty can thrive despite new threats. Liberty is hardly the 'natural' order of things; usually states have been either too weak to protect individuals or too strong for people to protect themselves from despotism. There is also a happy Western myth that where liberty exists, it's a steady state, arrived at by 'enlightenment'. But liberty emerges only when a delicate and incessant balance is struck between state and society - between elites and citizens. This struggle becomes self-reinforcing, inducing both state and society to develop a richer array of capacities, thus affecting the peacefulness of societies, the success of economies and how people experience their daily lives. Explaining this new framework through compelling stories from around the world, in history and from today - and through a single diagram on which the development of any state can be plotted - this masterpiece helps us understand the past and present, and analyse the future.
