Román Naruby, považovaný za „bibli dekadence“, odráží atmosféru francouzského fin de siecle. Jeho hlavním hrdinou je poslední potomek starobylého rodu des Esseintes, který – znuděn zhýralým a rozkošnickým životem a zhnusen celou společností – opouští Paříž a uchyluje se do samoty. Líčení jeho životního stylu, který dovádí až do absurdních důsledků, představuje jakýsi katalog dekadentního estétství: des Esseintes se věnuje četbě vzácných knih, degustaci vybraných jídel, výrobě parfémů či pěstování bizarních květin. Neustálé umělé jitření smyslů však zhoršuje jeho nervovou chorobu a zvyšuje pocit přesycenosti. Huysmansovo dílo zásadně ovlivnilo tvorbu autorů konce 19. a 20. století a svým analytickým zaujetím pro nitro hrdiny i omezením děje na nejzazší míru předjímá vývoj techniky moderní literatury. Text románu nově doplňujeme autorovou předmluvou, již napsal po dvaceti letech od prvního vydání a v níž zasazuje Naruby do kontextu svého dalšího díla a vysvětluje okolnosti, které vedly k jeho vzniku.

Des Esseintes : Le héros fin de siècle par excellence ! Cynique, misogyne et romantique à l'extrême. Aristocrate oisif, isolé, il se livre à une méditation sur l'existence, l'art, la religion, les femmes... Il fouille l'expérience de l'ennui jusqu'à l'écoeurement.
