Myšlenka založení `národní instituce a umělecké galerie` v USA se zrodila v r. 1866 v Paříži, v restauraci Le Pré Catalan v Bouloňském lesíku, kde se sešla skupinka Američanů. Návrh přednesený Johnem Jayem - vynikající americkou kulturní osobností s liberálními názory - byl přítomnými přijat s nadšením. Většinou to byli turisté, emigranti, obchodníci, ale i vládní činitelé, kteří se v hlavním městě Francie podíleli na přípravě světové výstavy, která se tu měla konat v následujícím roce. Následně byl v New Yorku založen Union League Club, který pod Jayovým vedením zapojoval do projektu vzdělance, finančníky, výtvarné umělce a literáty. V r. 1870 byl zvolen prezident John Taylor Johnston a dalších 27 představitelů muzea. Stát New York pak novou instituci, které se dostalo označení Metropolitan Muzeum of Art, oficiálně uznal 17. dubna.

Gallerie dell'Accademia v Benátkách vlastní nejvýznamnější kolekci benátského malířství od 14. do 18. století. Původ sbírky je úzce spjat s politickými událostmi počátku 19. století. Tehdy se muselo Rakousko v souladu s literou prešpurského míru, smlouvy uzavřené v roce 1805, vzdát svého postavení na Apeninském poloostrově a Benátky, zbavené tak tisícileté autonomie, se ocitly ve sféře francouzského vlivu. Staly se totiž součástí Italského království vytvořeného Napoleonem. V tomto období se na základě mnoha dekretů zavřely všechny veřejné paláce, bylo zrušeno kolem čtyřiceti farností a uzavřeno asi dvě stě církevních objektů a mnoho dalších zbouráno. Umělecké předměty, které nebyly prodány nebo které se neztratily, byly soustředěny v Accademii s cílem, jenž byl v podstatě didaktický. Bylo to vybudování pinakotéky napojené na školu a určené pro `ty, kteří se učí malovat`.
