Hlavní hrdina - zdánlivě bez kousku citu - popisuje, proč není špatné zabíjet lidi, zapletené do ilegálních obchodů. Poměrně logicky vysvětlí, proč to dělá on, aby se nám po zbytek knihy nezvedal žaludek nad spoustou krve, prolité právě z těchto důvodů. Napínavá četba, plná zajímavých myšlenkových pochodů, a místy s náznaky klasického anglického suchého humoru. Kniha se dá považovat za klasickou detektivku, přesto - nebo právě proto-, že hlavní hrdina má k Phillu Marlowovi asi tak daleko, jako nájemný zabiják z řad z policie k soukromému detektivovi, stojícímu vždycky na straně pravdy.
