Staša a Perla jsou sestry, dvojčata. Společně s matkou a dědečkem se v transportu dostanou do Osvětimi a dívky, které jsou si fyzicky k nerozeznání podobné, zaujmou nechvalně proslulého doktora Mengeleho, anděla smrti, který si v táboře vybudoval lidské zoo… Román je napsaný s nezvyklou lyrickou a psychologickou intenzitou, zajímavý je nejen tím, že o tomto tématu existuje téměř výlučně jen literatura faktu, ale hlavně tím, že příběh je vyprávěn očima mladých dívek. Bezpochyby patří k tomu nejsilnějšímu, co jsme dosud ve světové literatuře mohli k tomuto tématu číst.

Píše sa rok 1944 a do koncentračného tábora Osvienčim prichádzajú židovské dvojčatá Perla a Staša s matkou a so starým otcom. Dostanú sa do rúk neslávne známeho doktora Mengeleho, „anjela smrti“, ktorý na nich a na ostatných dvojčatách vykonáva neľudské experimenty. Perla po čase zmizne a Staša žije nádejou, že predsa len ostáva nažive. V plnej nahote tu vystupuje krutosť nacistického tábora, dozorcov, no aj vzájomná pomoc medzi väzňami. Osvienčim napokon oslobodzuje Červená armáda, väzni sú slobodní, putujú zničeným Poľskom, ale aj na tejto ceste na nich striehnu nástrahy, pri ktorých ide o život. Osudy oboch sestier tak môžeme sledovať aj po skončení vojny, keď sa v povojnovom Poľsku snažia nájsť jedna druhú. Tento pútavý a mimoriadne ľudský príbeh nie je zbytočne sentimentálny, vďaka čomu obludnosť nacistického režimu vystupuje ešte výraznejšie.
