An Inner Silence: The Portraits of Henri Cartier-Bresson

“These masterful photos blend the spontaneity of a great snapshot with the highly organized composition of a classical painting.”—Publishers WeeklyHenri Cartier-Bresson (1908–2004) was perhaps the finest and most influential image maker of the twentieth century, and his portraits are among his best-known work. Over a fifty-year period, he photographed some of the most eminent personalities of the era, as well as ordinary people, chosen as subjects because of their striking and unusual features. Originally published to coincide with an exhibition at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson in Paris, this book features both well-known images and previously unpublished portraits: Ezra Pound, André Breton, Martin Luther King, Samuel Beckett, Truman Capote, Susan Sontag, Carl Jung, William Faulkner, Marilyn Monroe, Henri Matisse, and many more. Each photograph was chosen because it perfectly embodies Cartier-Bresson’s description of what he was attempting to communicate in his work: “Above all I look for an inner silence. I seek to translate the personality and not an expression.” The portraits reproduced here—discreet, without artifice—confirm once more the singular gift of Cartier-Bresson, who instinctively knew in which revealing fraction of a second to click the shutter. 97 tritone photographs

Sergio Larrain

Sergio Larrain (19312012) crossed the photographic universe like a meteorite. After much travelling, his concern for purity and his attraction to meditation led him to withdraw to the Chilean countryside and live self- sufficiently. From there he began to write concerned as he was about the need to encourage the world to wake up to its possible fate while continuing in his deep love of photography. His work became limited to instants of enlightenment, pure moments of amazement. Sergio Larrain only published four books of his work during his lifetime, and a complete monograph of his work has never been put together. It was his choice, but this book fills that gap. Created with the full agreement of his family, it is edited by Agnès Sire, who after keeping up a long correspondence with the photographer, has worked with Magnum on preserving his estate. The selection of over 200 photographs is made up of two main axes, Latin America and Europe: Macchu Pichu, Bolivia, Chile and Valparaiso; and London, Paris and Italy. A true reflection of Larrains extraordinary personality, the book also features a selection of essential letters, drawings, workbooks and handwritten texts about meditation.

Henri Cartier-Bresson: Paris Revisited

Henri Cartier-Bresson was 'the eye of the 20th century' and one of the world's most acclaimed photographers. Paris was his home, on and off, for most of his life (1908-2004). The photographs he took of the city and its people manage to be both dreamlike and free of affectation. Here are around 160 photographs taken over a more than fifty-year career. Mostly in black and white, this selection reveals the strong influence on Cartier-Bresson of pioneering documentary photographer Eugene Atget (1857-1927), and the clear visual links with Surrealism that infused Cartier-Bresson's early pictures. After an apprenticeship with Cubist painter Andre Lhote, in 1932 Cartier-Bresson bought his first Leica, a small portable camera that allowed him to capture movement and the rhythms of daily life in Paris. Cartier-Bresson observed from close quarters the Liberation in August 1944 and the civil disturbances of May 1968. In between he also succeeded in capturing the faces of Parisians in their natural habitat, celebrated artists and writers and citizens alike. Ever-attentive to different ways of portraying the city around him, Cartier-Bresson returned to drawing during the last two decades of his life. This collection is not only a superb portrait of Paris in the 20th century, it is testament to Cartier-Bresson's skill as a supreme observer of human life.
