Wells. But why were these institutes built and what purposes do they serve today?
The Soviets promoted science as a utopian ideal to replace religion and rapidly modernise the country. 'Big science' projects, primarily for Cold War military purposes, involved thousands of researchers working in complete secrecy.
In the 1990s, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, many institutes were left destitute, their sophisticated technology condemned to extinction. But some scientists persevered, adapting to the new landscape. Today, defying the odds, they persist - even in wartime - to continue their work.

První monografie Freda Kramera (1913–1994), nejvýznamnějšího českého reklamního fotografa padesátých až osmdesátých let, čerpá z rozsáhlého souboru autorových prací, které po jeho smrti věnovala do sbírek Uměleckoprůmyslového musea v Praze jeho manželka. Kramer vystudoval ve třicátých letech pražskou Státní grafickou školu pod vedením profesora Karla Nováka, u něhož o desetiletí dříve studoval také Josef Sudek. V té době se Kramer věnoval i sociální fotografii. Po druhé světové válce, během níž byl internován v koncentračních táborech, se k fotografii zase vrátil. Vynikal zejména v ateliérové práci, kde spojil výtvarný odkaz avantgardy s poučeným vnímáním tehdejších obchodních strategií. V padesátých letech i později spolupracoval s podniky zahraničního obchodu (Jablonex, Skloexport, Centrotex, Kovo ad.) i s domácím Domem módy. Od roku 1967 do počátku devadesátých let byl externím pedagogem na pražské FAMU, kde vychoval řadu budoucích profesionálů. Těžiště výběru výstavy je v jeho pracích z šedesátých let, kdy jako jeden z mála využíval také barevnou fotografii a spolupracoval s předními grafiky. Do obecného povědomí se nejvíce zapsala jeho tzv. Košířská madona, starší reklamní fotografie, kterou si v osmdesátých letech vybrali jako svoji značku mladí vydavatelé samizdatové kulturní Revolver Revue. Publikace, navazující na stejnojmennou autorovu výstavní premiéru, má ctižádost toto povědomí podstatně rozšířit.

He caught his first big break landing a position as a staff photographer at SOUL Newspaper in LA in the early 1970s, just as soul, R&B, and funk were becoming part of the mainstream. He captured the rehearsals and sound checks, recording sessions and costume fittings, the quiet reflective moments and life on the road, and, of course, the wild photoshoots and memorable performances. These photographs define an era famed for its glamour, fabulous fashions, and utter devotion to the groove.
Letizia Battaglia
The perfect primer on renowned Italian photographer Letizia Battaglia.
Born in Palermo, Letizia Battaglia (1935-2022) took up journalism as a single mother, but discovered that it was easier to sell articles if she could also supply photographs. She became a news photographer for L'Ora, a Sicilian daily newspaper that took a stand against the Mafia and its political and economic connections. Between 1976 and 1991, she was a witness to some of the bloodiest events in Italian history, including the killing of judges, police officers and politicians. While these images brought her international recognition, she strongly opposed the label of 'Mafia photographer' and believed that her aim was to seek out life. She built up a many-sided portrait of her Sicilian homeland, developing a special sensitivity to women, girls and young children, and a deep empathy with those living in poverty. Her work stands as proof that both joy and suffering are part of the experience of being in the world.
