Black Bear
A dazzling memoir about one woman's coexistence with bears in the boreal forest and a singular meditation on sibling loss. When Trina Moyles was five years old, her father, a wildlife biologist known in Peace River as "the bear guy," brought home an orphaned black bear cub for a night before sending it to the Calgary Zoo. This brief but unforgettable encounter spurred Trina’s lifelong fascination with Ursus americanus—the most populous bear on the northern landscape, often considered a nuisance to human society. As a child roaming the shores of the Peace in the footsteps of her beloved older brother, Brendan, she understood bears to be invisible entities: always present but mostly hidden and worthy of respect. Growing up during the oil boom of the 1990s, the threats in the siblings' hard-drinking resource town were more human, dividing them from a natural reverence for the land, and eventually, from each other. After years of working for human rights organizations, Trina returned to northern Alberta for a job as a fire tower lookout, while Brendan worked in the oil sands, vulnerable to a boom-and-bust economy and substance addiction. When she was assigned to a tower in a wildlife corridor, bears were alarmingly visible and plentiful, wandering metres away on the other side of an electrified fence surrounding the tower. Over four summers, Trina begins to move beyond fear and observe the extraordinary essence of the maligned black bear—a keystone species who is as subject to the environmental consequences of the oil economy as humans. At the same time, she searches for common ground with Brendan on the land that bonded them. Impassioned and eloquent, Black Bear is a story of grief and a vision of peaceful coexistence in a divided world. It captures the fragility of our relationships with human and nonhuman species alike, and the imperative to protect the wild—along with the people we hold closest.

A Forever War
A Forever War: Israel and Palestine achieves something quite extraordinary. At a time when passions run high and the Israel-Gaza war intensifies, so much coverage is based on prejudice, fear and ignorance. Colin Shindler, Emeritus Professor of Israel Studies at SOAS, presents a calm, scholarly and dispassionate view of the past and of what might lie ahead. Since the founding of the State of Israel in 1948, the Middle East has been thrown into conflict. Shindler reflects on the key questions: How did this state of affairs come about? Is it even possible to write an impartial account? Could all the conflict have been avoided? How is it that Israel itself is a divided nation and even other Arab nations treat the Palestinians so badl? n both sides are the extremists - terrorists and ultra-nationalist religious Jews who are determined to seize land from Palestinians and dream of a new Jewish theocracy based on a Greater Israel - but A Forever War strives for objectivity and asks how we can best approach the truth in a time of such complex division.

There Are Places in the World Where Rules Are Less Important Than Kindness
One of our most beloved scientists, a fearless free spirit, Carlo Rovelli is also a masterful storyteller. In this collection of writings, the logbook of an intelligence always on the move, he follows his curiosity and invites us on a voyage through science, literature, philosophy and politics. Written with his usual clarity and wit, these pieces, most of which were first published in Italian newspapers, range widely across time and space: from Newton's alchemy to Einstein's mistakes, from Nabokov's butterflies to Dante's cosmology, from travels in Africa to the consciousness of an octopus, from mind-altering psychedelic substances to the meaning of atheism.
Charming, pithy and elegant, this book is the perfect gateway to the universe of one of the most influential physicists of our age.

Plastic Inc
Plastic is everywhere in our daily lives. But the companies making it - oil and petrochemical giants like ExxonMobil and INEOS - are hiding in plain sight. Because for all the vivid coverage of where plastic ends up, there is remarkably little discussion of where it comes from. In a shocking investigative deep dive, packed with character-driven storytelling, award-winning journalist Beth Gardiner exposes the truth of the vast, rapacious industry flooding our world with plastic - and now preparing to make more than ever.
From the Gulf Coast of Texas to the narrow streets of Antwerp and the glitz and bling of Dubai, Gardiner gives us an up-close look at the plastic industry's relentless growth, its extraordinary profits, its toxic pollution, and its hidden role in exacerbating climate change. Today, the industry is pouring billions of dollars into plans to double, and eventually triple, the amount of plastic it churns out, even as so many of us -aghast at this material's out-of-control proliferation - try to use less. As Big Oil stares down a future of diminishing demand for fossil fuels, plastic has become its financial lifeline.
Plastic Inc is full of stunning revelations, including how Big Oil pushed plastic into our lives and then sold us myths about recycling to ease our worries; how companies funded litter campaigns to blame us for the waste they were creating; and how they've poured cash and political muscle into fighting bans on single-use plastics. Gardiner also uncovers the hidden health crisis caused by chemicals in the items we use every day, and scientists' growing fear that microplastics may pose even greater dangers.
Plastic Inc is an extraordinary exposé of an industry that will stop at nothing to feed its voracious hunger for profit.
Silver Elite
Twenty-year-old Wren Darlington is not your ordinary Mod. She’s one of the most powerful in existence. But her world is divided.
On the Continent, being a known Modified means certain death, as the Primes - those immune to the biotoxin that nearly wiped out the population 150 years ago - want nothing more than to eliminate those who were enhanced by the toxin and developed psychic powers. LIE TO EVERYONE. Wren has survived all these years by concealing her abilities and keeping a low profile while doing what she can to aid the rebel Uprising in fighting against the Primes’ oppressive rule.
But one careless mistake places her in the crosshairs of the Continent’s military, and she is forced to join their most elite program: Silver Block. Unwittingly, her enemy has given her - and the Uprising - the perfect opportunity to strike a devastating blow from inside their ranks. AND WHATEVER YOU DO, DON’T FALL FOR YOUR GREATEST ENEMY.
That is, if she can keep her powers hidden, survive training, and prove herself to Cross Redden, her cocky, maddeningly attractive commanding officer. Despite the explosive chemistry between them, Wren cannot let Cross get in the way of her mission. But as war rages between Mods like her and those who aim to destroy them, emotions run high and secrets are revealed, forcing Wren to decide how far she’s willing to go to protect herself . . . and how much of the Continent is worth saving.
