Zátonyra futott házassága után bátran felvállalta vonzalmát saját neméhez, noha a homoszexualitás akkoriban bűncselekménynek számított Svédországban – kiállása az LMBTQI-közösségek számára azóta is mértékadó. 1941-ben öngyilkosságot követett el. Kallocain című, klasszikussá vált regényét a ’30-as évek eleji fasizálódó Németországban tett utazása ihlette. Az elbeszélésben Leo Kall kémikus találmánya, a szer, melytől a gyanúsítottak a legrejtettebb érzéseiket és gondolataikat is bevallják, a legfélelmetesebb fegyver lesz a szorongásra és kiszolgáltatottságra épülő, katonai fegyelem uralta államban. A gondolatbűnözés pedig csak egyféleképpen torolható meg: halállal.
A mű a 21. században sem veszített semmit aktualitásából, inspirációul szolgált a Christian Bale és Emily Watson főszereplésével készült, 2002-es Equilibrium című amerikai filmhez is.
