Unikátní encyklopedie Podrobný průvodce světem živočichů od mohutných savců po nejdrobnější bezobratlé Na knize, kterou vydalo nakladatelství Dorling Kindersley a která znamená převrat ve vydávání encyklopedické literatury, pracoval několik let početný tým biologů, redaktorů a fotografů. Výsledkem jejich snažení je 624 stran odborného, přitom však i laikům přístupného textu, map, ilustrací a především nádherných barevných fotografií, které nám dovolují nahlédnout do tajuplného světa zvířat. Je neuvěřitelné, že pro vydání v češtině text přeložil pouze jeden překladatel RNDr. Jiří Šmaha. Na překladu pracoval téměř rok a samozřejmě průběžně konzultoval s nejrůznějšími odborníky. Velkou oporou mu byla odborná redaktorka RNDr. Jana Horáčková, která rovněž sestavila rejstřík českých jmen i rejstřík vědeckých jmen
