Kniha komplexně pojednává o problematice uranu od historie jeho těžby v Krušnohoří přes vznik atomové bomby až po sovětský monopol na československý a východoněmecký uran po druhé světové válce. Zvláštní pozornost autoři věnují organizaci těžby této suroviny v komunistickém Československu po roce 1948, na které se zásadním způsobem podílely tisíce politických vězňů v pracovních táborech. Pro českého čtenáře zcela neznámou kapitolou jsou okolnosti těžby uranu na saské straně Krušných hor, kde vznikl největší uranový podnik v sovětském táboře – Wismut AG. Mezi jeho zaměstnanci bylo kromě politických vězňů nemalé množství žen pracujících i pod zemí.
