Jonathan Ransom, az Orvosok Határok Nélkül segélyszervezet tagja, hónapokkal azután, hogy meghiúsított egy nemzetközi terrorista támadást, álnéven dolgozik Afrikában. Doktor Jonathan Ransom a jeho půvabná žena Emma si vychutnávají úspěšnou horolezeckou výpravu do švýcarských Alp. Při jednom výstupu ale udeří prudká bouře a Emma se zabije při pádu do skryté ledové trhliny. O čtyřiadvacet hodin později obdrží Jonathan obálku určenou jeho mrtvé ženě. Uvnitř jsou dva lístky z úschovny zavazadel, ale když se Jonathan vypraví na nádraží, musí o Emminu pozůstalost tvrdě bojovat. Přestřelka si vyžádá život jednoho z útočníků, druhý je těžce zraněn. A jako by to nestačilo, vzápětí vyjde najevo, že to byli švýcarští policisté. Nejhorší ze všeho je ovšem důkaz Emminy zrady. Teprve ten Jonathana naprosto uzemní. Na rozjímání ovšem nemá čas. Bez vlastního přičinění se stal cílem špičkového zabijáka, a chce-li přežít, musí odhalit zničující informace, které před ním skrývala vlastní žena.
