V druhé knize kultovní série jsou sourozenci Baudelairovi svěřeni do péče výstředního strýčka Montyho a tráví čas ve společnosti zajímavých plazů. Chvíle pohody však bohužel nemají dlouhého trvání a sourozence znovu začnou pronásledovat nešťastné příhody. Záhy musejí čelit autohavárii, strašnému puchu, jedovatému hadovi, dlouhé dýce a mosazné lampě. Navíc se na scéně opět objeví osoba, kterou by nejraději už nikdy v životě nespatřili.

Ve třetí knize kultovní série cestují sourozenci Baudelairovi k Slzavému jezeru, kde se ubytují u své nové opatrovnice, tety Josephine. I tentokrát jsou však jejich příhody tragické a skličující a ve strašlivých událostech, které se odehrají u tety Josephine, se objeví hurikán Herman, hladové pijavice, studená okurková polévka, odporný zločinec a hrozivá panenka Drahuška.

A gyerekek tényleg nem féltek Olaf gróftól? Ha azért vetted kézbe ezt a könyvet, hogy egy egyszerű és vidám történetet olvass, akkor fel kell hívnom a figyelmed arra, hogy ez egy könyv.
Még a gyerekek is tudják, hogy a könyvek sokkal nyomasztóbbak, mint a filmek. Ha felhőtlen szórakozásra vágysz, jobban teszed, ha megnézel egy jóképű gróf főszereplésével készített mozifilmet. Például azt, amelyikben én játszom a főszerepet: a film egy halálos mérgű kígyóról, három szánalomra méltó árváról, egy belevaló grófról és egy megígért perui útról szól. Való igaz, hogy mindez a könyvben is előkerül, de olyan hosszadalmas körítéssel tálalva, hogy halálra unnád magad. Fogadd meg a tanácsom: most azonnal tedd le ezt a kötetet, és irány az első mozi, ahol megnézheted világrengető alakításom A balszerencse áradása című filmben. Ezt tényleg tovább akarod olvasni?
Violet, Klaus és Sunny a mindenben veszélyt sejtő Josephin nénihez kerülnek, akinek a háza meglepetéseket tartogat. A néninek, aki a nyelvi tudományok szerelmese, hatalmas könyvtára van... Ismét feltűnik az ördögi Olaf gróf, hogy az árvák vagyonát megkaparintsa. A korábbiaknál is álnokabb fondorlattal férkőzik a közelükbe, és már-már a gyerekek életére tör. Ám velük egyáltalán nem könnyű elbánni: a végsőkig kitartanak. Vajon hogyan segíti őket Klaus nagyszerű nyelvi logikája, Violet technikai leleményessége és Sunny bátorsága?
Újabb történetük továbbra is sok dermesztő rejtélyt és hátborzongató kalandot ígér...
Izgulsz értük?
Érthető, de talán jobb, ha ebbe most bele sem kezdesz.

Unless you are a slug, a sea anemone, or mildew, you prabably prefer not to be damp. You might also prefer not to read this book, in which the Baudelaire siblings encounter an unpleasant amount of dampness as they descent into the depths of despair, underwater. In fact, the horrors they encounter are too numerous to list, and you wouldn't want me even to mention the worst of it, which includes mushrooms, a desperate search for something lost, a mechanical monster, a distressing message from a lost friend, and tap dancing. As a dedicated author who has pledged to keep recording the depressing story of the Baudelaires, I must continue to delve deep into the cavernous depths of the orphans' lives. You, on the other hand, may delve into some happier book in order to keep your eyes and your spirits from being dampened.

This book is so shrouded in secrecy that even the publishers don’t know what to expect. Stay tuned because it promises to be even more terrible for the poor Baudelaires.
