Frank Whitford

Bauhaus - jedna z nejproslulejších škol výtvarného umění nejen 20. století, byl založen roku 1919 v německém Výmaru architektem Walterem Gropiusem a v roce 1933 byl v Berlíně násilně rozpuštěn nacisty. Navzdory své krátké existenci měl zásadní vliv na vývoj výtvarného umění, architektury, grafického, interiérového a průmyslového designu, typografie, módního návrhářství a v neposlední řadě i uměleckého vzdělávání. V prostředí Bauhausu působila řada významných a originálních umělců, kteří výrazným způsobem poznamenali rozličná umělecká odvětví, např. Vasilij Kandinskij a Paul Klee v malbě, László Moholy-Nagy v grafickém designu, Gunta Stölzl v textilním umění nebo Oskar Schlemmer ve scénografii. Autorem dnes již proslulé monografie o Bauhausu z roku 1984 je kunsthistorik a výtvarný kritik Frank Whitford (1941-2014), který byl jedním z předních britských odborníků na německé a rakouské umění 20. století. Whitfordova monografie je jedinečným a zevrubným historickým popisem fenoménu Bauhaus. Autor svůj rozbor principů, idejí, konceptů a vyučovacích metod Bauhausu opírá o dobový kontext a všímá si také působení jednotlivých vyučujících - význačných umělců, jako byli již zmiňovaní Paul Klee a Vasilij Kandinskij - a každodenního života studentů v dílnách Bauhausu, který je zdokumentován přímým svědectvím žijících pamětníků tohoto krátkého, avšak mimořádně vlivného uměleckého vzepětí.
