Ernst Lothar (1890–1974) vystudoval práva, a než se stal spisovatelem, divadelním kritikem, režisérem a ředitelem divadla, pracoval jako státní zástupce. Jeho manželkou byla herečka a zpěvačka Adrienne Gessnerová, s níž v roce 1938, po anšlusu, uprchl nejprve do Švýcarska a poté do USA. Napsal celou řadu povídek, novel a románů, z nichž většina se odehrává v Rakousku, které znal, a dotýká se palčivých témat. Podle jeho románů se točily filmy, Lothar sám i režíroval a psal scénáře. Jako autor byl nesmírně úspěšný a ověnčený mnoha literárními cenami.
