Život a dílo architekta Vladimíra Karfíka je mimořádné nejen v ČSR, ale i ve světovém kontextu . Slouží pro poučení a vzor nejen architektům, ale všem zájemcům a obdivovatelům budování koncernu BAŤA, jemuž v čele stály dvě osobnosti: Tomáš Baťa (1876 1932), zakladatel a Jan A. Baťa (1898 1965), pokračovatel. Dílo VZPOMÍNKY jsou základním poučením pro architekturu a pro historii Evropy ve dvacátém století s přihlédnutím k vývoji v USA. Odrážejí tvorbu hlavních proudů umělecké a technické moderny. Při bližším pohledu vidíme, že tvorba hlavních tvůrců moderny byla vysoce individuální. Vzpomeňme na objevná díla Le Corbusiera, Mies Van der Rohe, Waltera Gropia, na sovětské konstruktivisty z 20. let, nebo na modernisty Karla Honzíka, Josefa Havlíčka, Oldřicha Tyla, Bohuslava Fuchse, kteří vždy vytvářeli odvážně individuální styl. Zlínská moderna byla však trochu odlišná, neboť se v ní objevovaly aplikace dvou dominantních tendencí: funkce a konstrukce. Pokročila však i dále, aplikovala v praxi unifikaci, typizaci, standardizaci a produktivní ekonomii. Tato nová tvářnost byla podporována i tím, že architekti ve Zlíně byli nuceni pracovat pro obrovský průmyslový koncern, kde věda, technika a ekonomika hrály hlavní úlohu. Tomáš Baťa, zakladatel rád říkával: Jsou tři hodnoty, kterých si nejvíc vážím - čas, věda a technika. Nejdůležitější je však čas - když ho zanedbáme - tak věda a technika budou už zastaralé, tedy méněcenné nebo bezcenné. Tak se mohlo stát, že 5etážové budovy byly postaveny za 6 měsíců. Vladimír Karfík přišel do zlínské projekční kanceláře v dubnu 1930 z Chicaga, kde byl tři roky zaměstnán u velkých projekčních firem, z toho téměř polovinu doby u slavného Franka Lloyda Wrighta. Objevil ho budoucí šéf Jan Antonín Baťa, který zde otvíral 14 prodejen obuvi. Po tragickém skonu nevlastního bratra Tomáše (+1932) stál osobně v čele firmy BAŤA v letech 1932 až 1939, kdy byl nucen emigrovat přes USA do Brazílie. Vl. Karfík nastoupil do projekčního oddělení koncernu, kde projekční programy byly někdy obrovské. Budovala se další města a továrny v ČSR: Otrokovice, Napajedla, Zruč n. Sáz., Třebíč, Sezimovo Ústí, na Slovensku Batizovce a Partizánské. Také velké průmyslové celky v zahraničí. Jmenujme aspoň ty největší: Batanagar v Indii (20 000 zaměstnanců), East Tilbury v Anglii (12 000 zaměstnanců), Olmuth v Německu, Möhlin ve Švýcarsku, Best v Holandsku, Hellocourt ve Francii, Batavia v Kanadě, Borovo v Jugoslavii a Belcamp v USA. Všude firma překonávala zahraniční konkurenci nejen vědeckou a technickou úrovní, ale i ekonomickými systémy. Vladimír Karfík, ač stanul v čele projekčního oddělen, přesto vždy pracoval i na některém vlastním projektu. Nejzajímavější stavbou byla pro něho administrativní budova č.21, kde se podařilo realizovat, na svou dobu, některé novinky: klimatizaci, montážní příčky, ale převážně tzv. kancelářský velkoprostor, šéfovu pojízdnou kancelář ve výtahu, umývání oken zvenku pomocí výtahu apod. Byla to v této době nejvyšší budova v Evropě. Stavby Vladimíra Karfíka uvádíme podrobně v knize. Jde celkem cca o 95 realizovaných staveb v celém světě.

Kniha Jak vnímat architekturu z roku 1959 patří mezi autorovy nejslavnější tituly. Jde o přístupný, ale hutný text, který lze vnímat v analogii k fenomenologickým přístupům k umění, aniž by zde šlo o přímočarý vliv. V sérii přednáškových esejů se Rasmussen zaměřuje na elementární složky architektury jakožto zkušenosti: objemnosti a dutosti, tíže a lehkosti, hrubosti a hladkosti, barevných ploch a teploty barev apod. Kniha se obrací k širší kulturní veřejnosti, ale nepochybně se uplatní i ve výuce architektury i dalších uměleckých a kunsthistorických oborů.
