The Leisure Ethic

After a century of warnings, the 500-year reign of the work ethic is over. The work ethic has shaped our character, given purpose to our lives, and driven civilization forward. Now, as technology replaces human labour, we are faced with a profound dilemma; this crisis will leave us in a deep civilizational malaise, profoundly bored, ethically impoverished and without direction. In The Leisure Ethic, David Edward Tabachnick challenges the moral authority of work ethic and puts forth a long forgotten ancient alternative to work that can help reform and redirect our efforts toward building lives of ethical leisure. Through a historical and philosophical exploration of work, laziness, technological unemployment, and leisure, Tabachnick seeks to free our thinking and action from the shackles of the obsolete work ethic. Far from a curse, The Leisure Ethic demonstrates that the end of work can be a turning point that frees us from drudgery and opens the door to reimagining human purpose beyond productivity.

Dazai Shundai: Writings on Political Economy

Dazai Shundai (1680–1747) is a critical figure in Japanese political thought, who developed his philosophy in response to a perceived crisis in the status of the ruling samurai class, of which he was a member. This volume introduces sections from his most significant work of political thought, Keizairoku (1729), and its addendum Keizairoku shui (1744). Extracts present Shundai's program of political and economic reform, as he grappled with the upheavals and opportunities accompanying the breakdown of feudal agrarianism and the emergence of a modern commercial economy. While Shundai accepted the inevitability of this economic transition, his vision of political economy remained conservative, with a focus on strengthening samurai-class supremacy. Peter Flueckiger offers a critical introduction to Shundai's ideas, exploring the nuances of his engagement with Confucian thought, and extensive annotations provide further textual and historical context. This volume thus demonstrates how Shundai's writings prefaced increasingly ambitious theories of state-managed economic growth in early modern and modern Japan.

This memoir is also a record of how fine dining in England grew from stale and unexciting to world-leading. ZEBs

In recent years there has been universal agreement that traditional methods of fuelling buses and coaches need to be replaced with zero-emission alternatives. Zero-emission buses (ZEBs) are the latest development in bus technology and follow the introduction of low-emission buses and ultra-low emission buses. Bus companies have trialled and ordered considerable deliveries of electric, hydrogen and hybrid vehicles but the process hasn’t been without its problems, specifically around having the necessary infrastructure in place for charging batteries etc. Coach operators are starting to come on board too with longer distance journeys now possible.Richard Walter examines developments in both the UK and overseas with an array of interesting and mainly unpublished photos of many of the zero-emission vehicles now in service.

50 Stone Age Finds

Flint and stone finds hold a unique place in the archaeological record as they represent all that survives from most of the human past. The Stone Age did not end with the introduction of metals and some of the finest lithic objects date from the Bronze Age and the use of flint and stone has continued into recent times. These items can have a strange, gem-like quality – 500,000-year-old flint hand axes, recorded by the PAS, show a symmetry and grace that we can still admire today. Great skill and effort went into making flint and stone objects and how they were produced is examined here. Humanly worked flints are surprisingly common and, in fact, they are found everywhere. This book gives guidance on what to look for and how to recognise worked flint. It shows what can be commonly found along with superb objects recorded by the Portable Antiquities Scheme. Flint and stone implements should be seen in context and supporting text and images will show something of the cultures that produced this material and how we came to discover them.
