Syndrom srdečního selhání má zejména ve své chronické formě stoupající prevalenci. Výskyt srdečního selhání v populaci se ve vyspělých státech odhaduje na tři procenta, s předpokladem zvýšení prevalence o 50 % do konce dekády. Srdeční selhání je nejčastější příčinou hospitalizace pacientů starších 65 let, proto je diagnóza srdečního selhání na urgentním příjmu velmi častá. Kromě interních komplikací a komorbidit mohou mít pacienti s chronickým srdečním selháním další zdravotní problémy, proto se s těmito pacienty nesetkávají pouze praktičtí lékaři, internisté a kardiologové, ale i lékaři dalších specializací.
