Esej Země, či nebe? je náčrtem obecné interpretace dnešní doby a její krize spočívající v nástupu iliberálních politických sil a posilování „populistických“ hnutí. Současnost je zde chápána jako moderní emancipační projekt. Hlavní tezí textu je, že existuje překvapivě úzký vztah mezi předmoderním křesťanským hledáním spásy a moderní emancipační snahou ustavit člověka coby subjekt. Modernita se nestáhla do jednoho světa, do výlučné pozemskosti, ale skrytě zachovala metafyzickou strukturu země-nebe-peklo. To je rozhodující pro její vývoj, jehož obvyklou trajektorii je možno popsat jako snahu opustit současný stav (země) ve jménu ideálu (nebe), aby následně došlo k dosažení opaku toho, co bylo zamýšleno (peklo). Centrálním místem textu je tvrzení, že toto vývojové schéma se netýká jen ranějších forem modernity, jako byl komunismus nebo nacismus, ale že jeho předběžné obrysy lze pozorovat i dnes.
