Italian MAS & MS Boats 1915–49
An illustrated history of the motor torpedo boats of Italy’s fast coastal forces, from their raids on enemy battleships in World War I to the dashing campaigns of World War II. The confined seas around Italy made fast torpedo boats particularly suitable for the Regia Marina. The first were derived from the glamorous prewar hotel motorboats of Venice; although too slow, they scored remarkable successes against Austro-Hungary, sinking, among other successes, two battleships, as well as conducting valuable and little-known anti-submarine work. Researched from unpublished primary sources, this is the first authoritative book in English to study the MAS boats, their larger MS successors, and their wars in the Adriatic, Mediterranean and beyond. Renowned Italian naval historian Enrico Cernuschi explores their evolving technology, roles, and how the boats fought in two world wars. Illustrated with unpublished photos and superb original artwork, it traces their history from the famous actions of World War I to the troubled search for a real ‘velocissimo’ (very fast) MAS boat and their multifaceted roles in World War II, from the Malta convoy battles to the Black Sea naval war. It also explores little-known episodes such as their dangerous, clandestine roles post-1943, landing intelligence agents and commandos, and their secret 1945–48 battles against Yugoslavian communist infiltrators.

The Tree Is Missing
A powerful debut compelled by questions of borders and displacement. In one story I stay in that city forever,in one I board, and in another I am still waiting. I am daybreak; I am everywhere. In The Tree Is Missing, Shannon Kuta Kelly explores the poetics of the border. The collection crosses through non-places, moving between the unnamed and unmapped spaces on the edges of the European city. With remarkable poise and restraint, these itinerant poems experiment with oral history and translation, traversing the borderlines of nation, language and time. They draw on folklore to evoke a world that feels current and present, but which can only be reached through storytelling. In doing so, Kuta Kelly explores the loss and displacement - the fracture of identity - necessitated by personal and political turmoil. She writes with a restless immediacy from within the histories that continue to shape us.

Afloat
'Prose that is precise and beautiful as northern light … this book is an absolute delight' MOYA CANNON Join David Gange on a seabound journey along Atlantic coasts and islands, exploring places and ways of life that have been built on small rowed or paddled boats. These small boats outnumber decked ships by at least fifty to one. Yet almost all history writing is about big boats. This is a strange misrepresentation of maritime history that this book seeks to put right. From Ireland and Shetland to the Faroes and across to Greenland, Newfoundland, the US and the Caribbean, Árdras is the story of eight journeys in search of ocean-going rowed and paddled boats. Gange, an award-winning historian, joins community pilgrimages to tiny islands on their saints’ days, and races and regattas that express revivals of commitment to local boats and the community ideals they sustained. Along the way he encounters whales, sharks and icebergs – as well as journeys beneath skies filled, from horizon to horizon, with tens of thousands of seabirds. Small traditional boats fulfil roles in their communities unlike any other supposedly inanimate things. Often treated as living members of the family, with minds and lives of their own, they’ve been essential to many cultures’ ways of living with the seascapes that surround them. This gorgeous and lyrical book offers not only a journey into the past, but a vision of how these ways of life might inform our futures.
Unleashed
THE #1 SUNDAY TIMES BESTELLER A BOOK OF THE YEAR IN THE FINANCIAL TIMES, TELEGRAPH, DAILY MAIL, TIMES AND SUNDAY TIMES ‘ABSOLUTELY, TOTALLY, MIND-BLOWINGLY EXPLOSIVE’ ED BALLS 'SENSATIONAL' DAILY MAIL THE UNMISSABLE, UNVARNISHED MEMOIRS OF BORIS JOHNSON Boris Johnson has always been larger than life. Controversial, untrammelled by the normal rules of politics, his route to becoming Britain’s prime minister included a landmark career as a journalist, two terms as London’s mayor, leading the Vote Leave Brexit campaign and acting as foreign secretary. He won the largest Tory majority since 1987 when he went to the polls in December 2019 for a mandate to ‘Get Brexit Done’ – only to have his administration hit by the global Covid pandemic and toppled in a Tory putsch. Unleashed is his account of his time in politics, and a book that shatters the mould of the modern prime ministerial memoir. Written in his inimitable style, it is honest, unrestrained and deeply revealing about the politician who has dominated our times. This is his story of the fifteen years since he trounced Ken Livingstone at the polls to become mayor of London. Riots, tackling knife crime, bikes, buses, the London Olympics, and so much more. He writes about his role in Brexit, takes readers through all the big decisions and his reasons for taking them, and describes how he nearly died from Covid. Underlying everything in the book is his view that the UK is an extraordinary country and should have an exceptional future. These are the reflections of a political leader who believes fundamentally in levelling up – that there are millions of people in Britain who do not have the present they need or the future they deserve, and that it is the first job of politicians to put this right. It is all here. From soup to nuts, warts and all. As a journalist he was famed as a blurter of unsayable truths, and he has drawn again on this quality for the book. About people, policies, mistakes and triumphs. This is it – the reality as he saw it: unvarnished, unlocked, unleashed.

The Danger to be Sane
"An ebullient examination of madness, mortality, suicide... Montero finds that ‘deviance’ is often just a more truthful account of normal human behavior." —Chris KrausA dazzling journey into the eccentric, troubled, and luminous minds that shaped literature. In this bold, personal, and deeply researched blend of memoir, essay, literary analysis, psychological reflection, and intellectual sleuth story, Montero draws on psychology, neuroscience, creative literature, and the testimonies and biographies of authors and artists to weave a fascinating narrative on the connection between creativity and mental instability. With intelligence, generosity, and narrative élan, Montero brings to life figures such as Franz Kafka, Virginia Woolf, Emily Dickinson, Sylvia Plath, Marcel Proust, Joseph Conrad, and Doris Lessing, painting a fresco of the ways in which the brain works, its quirks and dark corners. She breaks down the forces that influence creativity and miraculously reassembles them before the reader’s eyes over three hundred gripping pages. Like a masterfully plotted detective story, each clue leads readers one step closer to new definitions of both the creative act and of what is and is not “normal.” Blending intimate memoir with wide-ranging cultural history, The Danger to Be Sane is a moving and inspirational homage to minds and lives that are outside of the mean. ’Twas a Divine Insanity— The Danger to be Sane From Emily Dickinson, Poem 593
