Studie obsažené ve svazku sledují vznik a fungování propracovaného systému pravoslavného poutnictví, duchovní a sociální péče, výstavby chrámů, škol a hospiců, systematického odkupování pozemků i archeologické činnosti, na níž se podílel stát i církev. Zvláštní pozornost je věnována roli Ruské duchovní misie a proměnám jejího působení v kontextu zásadních politických zlomů 20. století.
Publikace ukazuje, že tento fenomén nelze uzavřít mezi letopočty 1847 a 1917.
