The Last Titans: Churchill and de Gaulle
A compelling dual biography of Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle that shines new light on two of the greatest figures of the twentieth century.
Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle were thrown together by war. Their triumph over Hitler ensured their achievements will never be forgotten. But their story is far richer than victory alone.
De Gaulle - tall, awkward and incorruptible - had traits often associated with the English. Churchill - short, witty and charming - was a true French-style politician. Their working relationship was rarely smooth, but mutual respect ran deep despite their differences.
In this brilliantly absorbing account, prize-winning historian Richard Vinen casts new light on these exceptional men and the nations they led. By weaving their two stories into one, The Last Titans offers a fresh and exhilarating exploration into who they were, what they accomplished and the legacies they left behind.

The Cheese Cure
‘A wonderful book.' Cathy Rentzenbrink ‘A remarkable tale’ The Spectator A giant wheel of Comte´ – a cheese full of delight, a mosaic of flavour – can sometimes become flat. Despite all that’s gone into making it and caring for it, its complexity mysteriously vanishes, its spark dies. Cheesemongers know that. That’s why they regularly test the cheeses: they insert a cheese iron deep into the wheel and extract a sample from its core. Sometimes they can cure it and sometimes they can’t. A highly successful BBC and Guardian Journalist, somehow Michael Finnerty's life had become flat. His psychological cheese iron told him he needed to make a change, and he becomes convinced his salvation lies in cheese. Michael becomes an apprentice cheesemonger at Borough Market, and is plunged into a world of intense physicality, extraordinary knowledge, and total geeky passion. From learning the cheese's personal nighttime riders – Castillon Frais needs to sit in its box underneath some waxed paper but its box needs to be kept in a plastic sheath, Comté sits unwrapped in a cool cupboard, and has a quick saline bath before bed – to learning intricate ways to wrap their different shapes; from being able to taste nuances between the cheeses, to slicing fingers, bruising toes, getting allergic reactions, and the simple dog-tiredness of being on your feet from the crack of dawn till night, Michael's new job is more demanding than he could ever have imagined – and he loves it. Then when Borough Market is subjected to a terrifying attack, Michael realises through cheese, he has found something even more powerful – community.

Forgotten Forests
Ancient trees, some over a thousand years old, are dotted around the British Isles, the last survivors of a lost world. Now, new scientific studies of these trees and of fossilised forests and of our oldest wooden artifacts can help us to understand the many woodlands that have disappeared from our landscapes. Locked in ice for more than twenty thousand years, the lands that now make up Britain and Ireland were some of the last settled by humans. The earliest people, Mesolithic hunter-gatherers like Cheddar Man, arrived around eleven thousand years ago to find dense forests. While they lived lightly, they did introduce fire, which they used to create clearings, and this was the beginning of the reshaping of Britain’s forests. When Neolithic farmers migrated to Britain from Europe some six thousand years ago, it meant a violent end to the hunter-gatherers’ way of life. It also indicated a dramatic change for the ecosystems. Forests were cleared for fields, trees and plants fed to livestock and predators hunted. A wild, forested world became one of agriculture and villages. As humans learned to work bronze, then iron, they also used wood in myriad ways, building homes, then cathedrals, hand tools then furniture and early machines, boats and eventually immense ships. The forests of Britain and Ireland fuelled the burgeoning human civilisation, from the Romans, Anglo Saxons, Vikings and Normans, to the British, Scottish, Welsh and Irish peoples through to the present day. In that time our woodlands have changed beyond recognition, but clues to their story remain. Biologist and Britain’s first senior officer for Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty Jonathan Mullard retraces the history of the forgotten forests of Britain and Ireland, piecing together historical records going as far back as the written word and archaeological evidence going back far further. The result is a wealth of arcane anecdotes and the latest scientific understanding of our natural history, as well as a fascinating journey through the forests, landscapes and human history of Britain.

The Eames Houses
The first comprehensive overview of Charles and Ray Eames’s residential architecture
The Eames Houses is the first comprehensive overview of Charles and Ray Eames’s residential architecture. It includes several previously unpublished buildings and places the powerhouse couple’s architectural work alongside their widely known designs in furniture, exhibitions, and film, showing how they carried consistent design principles across different disciplines.
Charles (1907-1978) and Ray (1912-1988) Eames’s residential architecture is defined by their human-centered approach to modernism. Their work demonstrates a deep commitment to structural clarity, user-centered functionality, and the intelligent use of prefabrication. Rather than focusing purely on aesthetics, the Eameses approached architecture as a form of problem-solving, aiming to create flexible systems that offered a background for life and work in all its expressions.
This book presents all eight houses they designed between 1945 and 1955, featuring sketches, drawings, letters, and photographs – many of which have never been published before – alongside newly produced diagrams and models that offer further insight into their design process.
The book is organized into six chapters, one of which is entirely dedicated to Case Study House No. 8 with newly commissioned photography, together with a wealth of materials from the archives of the Eames Office – many of which are published here for the first time. The book further contextualizes the couple's thinking about domestic living in related fields such as furniture, toy, textile, and graphic design, anchoring the house projects within their work at large.
The book accompanies an exhibition in Milan in April 2026 that is planned to travel internationally.
