Kniha představuje autorovu prvotinu. Hlavním hrdinou je Charles Highway, jenž vypráví svůj příběh krátce před svými dvacetinami. Jeho otec je významný muž, kterého ale syn nenávidí. Charles se seznámí s dívkou jménem Ráchel, jíž potkal na jednom večírku. Beznadějně se zamiluje, a navzdory přítomnosti jejího amerického přítele, se ji snaží pozvat na schůzku, ona souhlasí. Jejich láska se rozvíjí...úplně se ale k sobě nehodí. Charles je cynický, zatímco Ráchel je milá, byť trochu naivní. V obou rodinách hlavních protagonistů vznikají směšné i trapné situace. Milovníci a znalci díla M. Amise budou moci dumat, nakolik je Charles skutečnou literární předlohou autora.

Dom návštev je zvláštna súčasť pracovného tábora, v ktorom sa vybraní väzni mohli na jednu noc stretnúť so svojimi manželkami. Martin Amis vytvára komorný príbeh dvoch bratov, ktorí pred uväznením, počas pobytu v tábore i po prepustení na slobodu bojovali o jednu ženu. O zvláštnom ľúbostnom trojuholníku rozpráva formou listu nevlastnej dcére starší z bratov, osemdesiatšesťročný smrteľne chorý muž. Amis využíva túto rozprávačskú metódu nielen na množstvo reminiscencií a návratov do tragických osudov hlavných postáv románu, ale aj na rozsiahle reflexie, v ktorých sa pokúša diagnostikovať minulosť i súčasnosť Ruska. Postavy bratov zároveň symbolizujú dva protikladné ľudské charaktery – bezohľadného karieristu a naivného rojčivého idealistu, pričom autor akoby programovo nadväzoval na tradície ruskej literatúry, najmä na Dostojevského.

Like a spiritual convert, the familial paragon becomes an anti-husband, an anti-father. He submits to an alien moral system - one among many to be found in these pages. We are introduced to the inverted worlds of the 'yellow' journalist, Clint Smoker, the high priest of hardmen, Joseph Andrews, the porno tycoon, Cora Susan, and Kent Price, the corpse in the hold of the stricken airliner, apparently determined, even in death, to bring down the plane that carries his spouse. Meanwhile, we explore the entanglements of Henry England: his incapacitated wife, Pamela, his Chinese mistress, He Zhezun, his fifteen-year-old daughter, Victoria, the victim of a filmed 'intrusion' which rivets the world - because she is the future Queen of England, and her father, Henry IX, is its King. The connections between these characters provide the pattern and drive of "Yellow Dog". Novelists have noticed that contemporary reality keeps outdoing their imaginations. Hlavní postavou příběhu je doktor Tod T. Friendly, muž dvou tváří a dvou životních příběhů, spořádaný občan s děsivou minulostí, o které však s výjimkou jeho niterného svědomí nikdo netuší. Friendlyho totožnost se začíná odhalovat v okamžiku, kdy je životní pouť hlavního hrdiny u konce a vyprávění se postupně vrací do jeho minulosti. Najednou se ocitáme v některé z řad kinosálu a kde se nám před zraky začíná odvíjet příběh běžící jako film, ten však kdosi nevědomky spustil POZPÁTKU. Počáteční harmonie se tak záhy mění v destrukci, stáří se stává mládím a nevinnost ustupuje strašlivé realitě prodělané zkušenosti hlavního hrdiny. Tod německy smrt, friendly anglicky vlídná – vlídná smrt přichází ke svým obětem a dějištěm je najednou neblaze proslulé působiště doktora Mengeleho – vyhlazovací tábor Osvětim!
