Knížka, jejíž anotaci právě prohlížete, je až neskutečně krásná a pronikavě silná. Je z toho šafránově mála vyprávění, jimž člověk podlehne, ať je mu devět, třicet dva nebo sedmdesát osm let. Výjimečná knížka, příběh psaný pro čtenářky a právě tak pro čtenáře! Hned na počátku prožijeme hrůzu:
Potom se začaly dít hrozné věci a Mary pochopila, co znamená tajemná atmosféra, která se vznášela nad oním ránem. Propukla totiž cholera. Rozpoutala se ve své nejhorší podobě a lidé padali mrtví k zemi jako mouchy. Chůva onemocněla hned první noc a právě kvůli její smrti se ozýval nářek z příbytků služebnictva. Než nadešel další den, zemřeli ještě tři sluhové a ostatní se v hrůze rozutekli pryč. Všude se šířila panika a v bungalovech umírali lidé.
Z Mary se během několika hodin stává sirotek a za několik dní musí opustit koloniální Indii – jediný domov, který dosud poznala. Vydává se ke vzdáleným příbuzným do Anglie, jenže v jejich velkém tmavém domě, který má snad stovku většinou nepoužívaných, zamčených pokojů – nejméně jeden z nich ovšem ukrývá tajemství – se cítí, jako by zůstala na světě úplně sama. Zvlášť když člověk všude kolem narazí napřed na lány nudných zelinářských záhonů a za nimi pak na nekonečná pustá vřesoviště.
