Řada hudebníků v rozhovorech mluvívá o tom, že by jednou chtěli napsat román, že je to ohromně láká nakonec se však k tomu nikdy nedostanou. Anebo si opravdu čas najdou a dají do psaní veškerou píli a trpělivost, pak se ovšem ukáže, že se krapet přecenili a že snad měli raději zůstat u písní To ale není případ Nicka Cavea. Ve svém románovém debutu A uzřela oslice anděla z roku 1989 skvěle mísí vlastní osobitou poetiku, plnou romantických obrazů, biblických narážek, morbidních představ i černočerného humoru, s velkým čtenářským rozhledem (inspirací mu byla především americká jižanská literatura, Williamem Faulknerem či Flannery OConnorovou počínaje a Cormacem McCarthym konče). Jeho barokně košatému, grotesknímu příběhu, zasazenému na americký Jih 40. a 50. let dvacátého století, dominuje násilí, alkohol, zvrácenost a zvířecí instinkty; nechybí ani Boží trest a ďábelský smích. V románu A uzřela oslice anděla, kongeniálně přeloženém Tomášem Hráchem, se zkrátka nic neodpouští a za vše se tvrdě platí. Román sklidil nadšený ohlas světové kritiky pro svůj jazyk plný biblických metafor a sevřený příběh vyprávěný na pomezí snu a šílenství.

KDO: Zpěvák, skladatel, multiinstrumentalista, herec, scénárista a spisovatel v jedné osobě, to je Nick Cave. Pochází z Austrálie, kde sformoval kapelu Boys Next Door, jež byla součástí místní post-punkové scény. V roce 1980 se skupina přejmenovala na Birthday Party a přesídlila do Evropy. Birthday Party v čele s Nickem Cavem si brzy získali značný respekt a velmi dobrou reputaci, jejich koncerty byly intenzivní a plné emocí. V roce 1983 se kapela rozpadla a Cave založil nové seskupení Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, v němž se sešel třeba s multiinstrumentalistou Mickem Harveym nebo kytaristou Blixou Bargeldem. Skupina je dnes považována za jednu z nejoriginálnějších post-punkových a alternativně rockových kapel, také u nás je její popularita značná. CO: Do roku 2017 vydali Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds šestnáct studiových alb, od From Her To Eternity (1984) po Skeleton Tree (2016).
