Na palubě záoceánské lodi je do rozvíjející se novokrobuzonské kolonie Nova Esperium převážena skupina vězňů a otroků, jejichž těla byla přetvořena do groteskních biologických podob. Avšak za moře neplují jen oni. Přidává se k nim hrstka cestovatelů, z nichž každý má důvod k rychlému odjezdu z města.
