Začne to zvláštním chováním lišky, která nemůže ze Zanny spustit oči, i když pár drobností se objevilo snad ještě předtím. Neznámá žena osloví Zannu s úctou jako „Šuazy“ a o dopisu se vzkazem „Těšíme se na setkání s Vámi, až se kolo otočí“, ani nemluvě.Když ale dívky zpozorují, jak je sleduje na první pohled obyčejný deštník, rozhodne se Zanna přijít věcem na kloub a i přes protesty opatrné Deeby vstoupí do sklepení, kde uvede do provozu skrytý portál vedoucí ze známého Londýna do Londýna zcela jiného.NeLondýn je světem, kde vás může začít pronásledovat kupa odpadků, lze v něm narazit na obávané vražedné žirafy, na pomoc v nouzi vám přispěchají ozbrojené popelnice, setkáte se tu i s krejčím, co má špendlíky místo vlasů a svezete se třeba létajícím dvoupodlažním autobusem.A obyvatelé neLondýna už na Zannu čekají, protože ona je Šuazy – Vyvolená. Proroci předpověděli, že zachrání svět před hrozivým Smogem. Deeba je prostě přítelkyně, která plní roli pouhého doprovodu. Přemoci Smog je totiž Zanniným osudem… jak také jinak? Jenže obě dívky brzy přicházejí na to, že v neLondýně není vůbec nic, jak by se mohlo na první pohled zdát…Další skvělý román Chiny Miévilla se nese v tradici rozverné, mnohdy však i dosti temné fantazie Lewise Carrolla a stejně tak jako nestárnoucí díla tohoto klasika světové literatury, je i on určen pro čtenáře doslova kteréhokoli věku. Kniha je navíc doprovázena ilustracemi samotného autora.

Na palubě záoceánské lodi je do rozvíjející se novokrobuzonské kolonie Nova Esperium převážena skupina vězňů a otroků, jejichž těla byla přetvořena do groteskních biologických podob. Avšak za moře neplují jen oni. Přidává se k nim hrstka cestovatelů, z nichž každý má důvod k rychlému odjezdu z města. Mezi nimi je i Bellis Chladnovína, talentovaná lingvistka, jejíž tlumočnické služby jí napomáhají nejen vydat se na cestu, nýbrž i uniknout hroznému trestu. Je totiž bývalá milenka Izáka Dana der Grimnebulina, vynikajícího odbojného vědce, který v Novém Krobuzonu nevědomky rozpoutal pravé peklo. Bellisin plán je jednoduchý: žít mezi novými kolonisty, dokud nebude bezpečné vrátit se do rodného města. Ale když loď ve Vzdutém oceánu přepadnou piráti a exemplárně popraví kapitána a jeho zástupce, přeživší pasažéři jsou odvezeni na Armadu, města postaveného z vraků uloupených lodí, do volně plavoucí mořské mocnosti, které vládne prapodivná dvojice zvaná Milenci. Na Armadě dostanou všichni práci a dokonce i přetvoři jsou si na ní rovni s lidmi, kaktusíky a raky. Nicméně nikdo ji nesmí opustit. Bellis, v zajetí osamělá a zahořklá, ví, že dát najevo odbojné myšlenky znamená rozsudek smrti. Místo toho musí pokradmu shánět informace o úmyslech Armady. Odpověď lze nalézt u amorfních tvorů, které se nikým nepozorováni vznášejí míle pod hladinou moře - děsivých bytostí, jež si předsevzaly podivný a hrůzyplný úkol...

China Miéville je literární fenomén známý bezbřehou originalitou. Mohlo byse zdát, že po četných úspěších v románové tvorbě nemůže již ničímpřekvapit, ale to by byl velký omyl. Právě kratší práce souboru Pátrání poJakeovi a jiné příběhy ukazují, jak skvěle umí využít volnosti, kterou mujen zdánlivě omezený prostor povídek nabízí. Každá z nich odráží jakostřípek zrcadla obraz jednoho z nejdůležitějších objevů fantastické prózyposledního desetiletí. Vedle bohatého jazyka a neskutečné invence zdepřirozeně najdete i některé vypravěčské slabiny, ty však pouze dotvářejíkomplexní pohled na celou autorovu pozoruhodnou tvorbu. Pátrání po Jakeovi ajiné příběhy jsou jako první souborné vydání kratších prací Chiny Miévilladoslova povinnou četbou pro všechny příznivce jeho neopakovatelného stylu,vždyť právě povídky mnohdy vypoví o autorovi řadu dosud neznámýchskutečností...
