Agatha Christie

V ňom prvýkrát čitateľov zoznámila s postavou Hercula Poirota, malého, trocha výstredného a márnomyseľného Belgičana, žijúceho v Anglicku.

Hercule Poirot vystupuje celkom v 33 románoch a mnohých poviedkach. Agatha Christie vytvorila okrem Poirota aj ďalšiu úspešnú postavu -- milú staršiu dámu so starodievčenskými viktoriánskymi spôsobmi, slečnu Jane Marplovú. Slečna Marplová bola predstavená prvýkrát v románe Vražda na fare (The Murder at the Vicarage) v roku 1931.

Agatha Christie pod menom Mary Westmacottová napísala šesť psychologických románov. Pridala ešte devätnásť zväzkov detektívnych poviedok, štrnásť divadelných hier s detektívnym námetom, dve diela literatúry faktu a knihu básní.

Množstvo príbehov, či už s Herculom Poirotom alebo slečnou Marplovou, bolo úspešne sfilmovaných. O úspechu Agathy Christie vypovedajú aj čísla. Doteraz boli na celom svete predané vyše dve miliardy výtlačkov s jej dielami. Viac exemplárov má zatiaľ už len Biblia  a diela od Shakepeara.

The Labours of Hercules

Poirot sets himself a challenge before he retires - to solve 12 cases which correspond with the labours of his classical Greek namesake! In appearance Hercule Poirot hardly resembled an ancient Greek hero. Yet -- reasoned the detective -- like Hercules he had been responsible for ridding society of some of its most unpleasant monsters. So, in the period leading up to his retirement, Poirot made up his mind to accept just twelve more cases: his self-imposed 'Labours'. Each would go down in the annals of crime as a heroic feat of deduction.
