A fiatal és roppant csinos Anne Beddingfeld apja halála után Londonba kerül, ahol szemtanúja lesz egy különös balesetnek: a földalattira vár, amikor egy férfi ijedtében a sínek közé esik és meghal. Mit kereshet Poirot felügyelő, ez a híresen kényelem- és tisztaságszerető úriember egy régészeti ásatáson Irakban, ahol a mostoha körülmények aligha teszik kellemessé ott-tartózkodását. Az ásatáson dolgozók jól ismerik egymást, és természetesen el sem tudják képzelni, hogy a gyilkos közöttük lenne. Annál is inkább, mert az áldozat hosszú időn át kapott fenyegető leveleket egykor már halottnak hitt férjétől, így logikusnak tűnik, hogy ezt a jóformán mindenki számára ismeretlen személyt gyanúsítsák. Poirot azonban sohasem kedvelte az ilyen kézenfekvő magyarázatokat...

Minden nagy alkotónak van egy játszótere, ahol nem kell az elvárások szerint viselkednie. Agatha Christie is írhat olyan történeteket, amelyekből hiányoznak azok a tipikus fordulatok, melyeknek köszönhetően világhíres lett.  Mondjuk a novellában nem követnek el igazi gyilkosságot, és Poirot figurája egy gyerekes csíny csetlő-botló áldozataként tűnik fel. Ugyanakkor számtalan módon köszönnek vissza az írásokból azok a megoldások, melyek az írónő klasszikus alkotásait híressé tették.  Agatha Christie bármely történet megformálása során képes arra, hogy folyamatosan, ugyanakkor remek kompozíciós érzékkel adagolja a váratlan fordulatokat, és mikor már kényelmesen hátradőlve azt hinnénk, hogy sejtjük a végkifejletet, ő megint rácáfol elvárásainkra. Ezért szeretjük.

Mrs. McGillicuddy épp a karácsonyi bevásárlásából utazik haza, amikor a mellette párhuzamosan haladó másik vonat egyik ablakán hirtelen felszalad a roló.
