Úkladná vražda - tak zněl výrok poroty, který na doživotí poslal za mříže mladého Jacka obviněného ze zabití své matky. Z galerie postav anglické královny zločinu tentokrát k českým čtenářům přichází státní úředník na penzi, který na první pohled neupoutá ničím. Něčím ale vyniká - celý život se věnoval statistice, a tak dokáže léčit lidská srdce. Nesmysl? Kdepak! Práce s čísly přivedla Parkera Pynea k názoru, že - podobně jako s nemocí - jakmile známe podstatu neduhu, lze se s ním vypořádat. A tak dokáže pomoci ženě, jejíž manžel si našel mladší náhradu, muzi, kterého manželka přehlíží, vystaví dva samotáře dobrodružstvím, až pochopí výhody života ve dvou, napraví sobeckou matinku, jíž není žádná nevěsta pro synáčka dost dobrá... Ale nebyla by to Agatha Christie, kdyby také neodhalila zloděje, podvodníka či dokonce vraha!
