Druhý den se rodina z rádia dozvěděla, že problémy s ptáky jsou po celé zemi. Nat začal zabezpečovat dům a sledoval chování ptáků. Zjistil, že se při odlivu stahují k moři a útočí pak s přílivem. Nat se vydal pro pomoc k přátelům. Ti ale byli uklováni stejně jako celé rodiny z nové zástavby, takže Nat pochopil, že jsou zcela izolováni. Proslavil ji román Živá a mrtvá (Rebecca), který vyšel tiskem poprvé v roce 1938. Díky němu se stala jednou z nejpopulárnějších a nejprodávanějších spisovatelek na světě. Všech 15 románů, které napsala, se stalo bestsellery a některé z nich byly i úspěšně zfilmovány. To platí i o hrůzostrašném příběhu PTÁCI, který se stal předlohou fascinujícího filmu Alfréda Hitchcoka. Od roku 1977 již nepublikovala a žila až do smrti v ústraní v poklidném Cornwallu, kde také 19.4.1989 zemřela.
