První společný případ Sherlocka Holmese a dr. Watsona. Traduje se, že Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) začal literárně tvořit ve volných chvílích, kdy čekal na pacienty ve své ordinaci. Jestli pak při vyšetření používal i deduktivní metodu, kterou proslavil ve svých detektivních příbězích, to se již neví. Ví se však, že právě tuto metodu odpozoroval za medicínských studií od svého profesora, který si s potěšením pohrával s úsudky o svých pacientech při jejich první návštěvě. Stejně jako Sherlock Holmes vynikal Doyle v ledasčem, vedle medicíny a literatury se věnoval historii, zabýval se sportem, byl reformátorem právního systému, a dokonce se několikrát osvědčil jako detektiv. První detektivní román vydal Doyle v roce 1887, jmenoval se Studie v šarlatové a poprvé v něm představil slavnou dvojici – geniálního detektiva Sherlocka Holmese a jeho věrného přítele a zároveň vypravěče Holmesových případů doktora Watsona. U čtenářů však více zabrala až druhá kniha Znamení čtyř. Po ní následovala výhodná objednávka Strand Magazinu na sérii povídek s Holmesem. Doyle nakonec těchto povídek napsal celkem šestapadesát a na jejich zápletkách se učili řemeslu další detektivní autoři, zatímco některé Holmesovy detektivní postupy prý přebírali policisté ze slavného Scotland Yardu. Příběhy byly tak úspěšné, že se na Strand Magazine stály fronty. Je paradoxem, že povídky, které mu vynesly největší úspěch, psal Doyle kvůli obživě. A protože ho odváděly od psaní vážné literatury, pokusil se – věren svému žánru – Sherlocka Holmese zabít. The Poison Belt was the second story, a novella, that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote about Professor Challenger. Written in 1913, roughly a year before the outbreak of World War I, much of it takes place--rather oddly, given that it follows The Lost World, a story set in the jungle--in a room in Challenger's house. This would be the last story written about Challenger until the 1920s, by which time Doyle's spiritualist beliefs had begun to affect his writing.

The US edition by McClure, Phillips & Co. added another 28,000 to the run.This was the first Holmes collection since 1893, when Holmes had "died" in "The Adventure of the Final Problem". His Last Bow is a collection of seven Sherlock Holmes stories (eight in American editions) by Arthur Conan Doyle, as well as the title of one of the stories in that collection. Even today, most American editions of the canon include it with His Last Bow, while most British editions keep the story in its original place in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes.
