Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) byl mužem mnoha talentů a zájmů. Působil jako praktický lékař, laický kazatel, přesvědčený spiritista, historik a reformátor občanského života. Deset let strávili společně se svojí ženou na cestách po všech kontinentech, kde se věnoval šíření myšlenek spiritismu.
Synonymem jeho spisovatelské kariéry se stal detektiv Sherlock Holmes, ale bylo by skutečnou chybou opomíjet řadu jeho dalších novel a povídek, které často mívají duchovní podtext. Doylovo literární mistrovství, spočívající ve schopnosti vytvořit silnou a vtipně pointovanou zápletku, se promítá i do tohoto souboru s námořní tematikou. Čtyři z nich přitom spojuje jediná hlavní postava, pirátský kapitán John Sharkey, pro autora zvláštní, s mírnou nadsázkou pojatý prototyp zla. Povídky zařazené do sbírky Z kolébky modrých vln neztrácejí ani po letech od svého vzniku svoje kouzlo. A to i přesto, že když byly ničivé války o španělské dědictví ukončeny utrechtskou smlouvou, bezpočet korzárů, které vysílaly na moře strany doposavad znepřátelené, shledalo, že mají jaksi po zaměstnání.
A dilettáns detektív
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) a klasszikus krimi megteremtője. Eredetileg orvosnak indult, de hamar feladta a praxist az írás kedvéért. Először nagyszabású történelmi regényekkel jelentkezett, majd 1887-ben (tulajdonképpen pénzkereset céljából) megírta élete első detektívregényét, az A Study in Scarlet című krimit. Ebben a könyvben lép először színre a jellegzetesen angol detektív, a zseniális Sherlock Holmes és segítőtársa, a kissé ügyefogyott Watson doktor, akik a későbbi detektívregények alapfigurái is lesznek. Jellemző, hogy a szerző, akit 1902-ben a búr háborúról írt könyvéért lovaggá ütöttek, olyannyira nem szerette hősét, hogy egyik novellájában „megölte” Sherlock Holmest, az olvasók és a kiadó követelésére azonban „feltámasztotta”. Így összesen 60 Holmes-novellát és két regényt is írt. A regények: The Hound of the Baskervilles (A sátán kutyája) és a The Signs of Four (A dilettáns detektív). Az utóbbi több mint 70 év után most jelenik meg újra magyarul.
