Koralína objevila ty dveře krátce potom, co se nastěhovali do domu. Netušila, že tyhle dveře vedou do jiného světa, který je skoro stejný jako ten náš, jenže na první pohled lepší. Její tadruhá matka a tendruhý otec na ni mají čas a i sousedé jsou daleko zábavnější. Jenomže není všechno zlato, co se třpytí a Koralína nakonec zjistí, že některé dveře by měly zůstat navždy zavřené. Napínavou knihu Neila Gaimana zadaptoval do comicsové podoby výtvarník P. Craig Russell, který je velmi populární díky práci na Gaimanově sérii Sandman a comicsovému zpracování klasických operních děl Salome, Prsten Neibelungu a Kouzelná flétna. Gaiman se v jednom rozhovoru svěřil, že ho při psaní Koralíny velmi inspiroval film Jana Švankmajera Něco z Alenky. Koralína vznikala původně jeko scénář přímo pro režiséra Henryho Selicka (Nightmare before Christmas / Ukradené Vánoce Tima Burtona), který byl později Gaimanem přepracován do knihy. Selickův film má v našich kinech premiéru 11. 6. 2009.

Shortly after moving into an old house with strange tenants above a nd below, Coraline discovers a big, carved, brown wooden door at the far corner of the drawing room. And it is locked. Curiosity runs riot in Coraline's mind and she unlocks the door to see what lies behind it. Disappointingly, it opens onto a brick wall. Days later, after exploring the rest of the house and garden, Coraline returns to the same mysterious door and opens it again. This time, however, there is a dark hallway in front of her. Stepping inside, the place beyond has an eerie familiari ty about it. The carpet and wallpaper are the same as in her flat. The picture hanging on the wall is the same. Almost.
