A vadnyugati irodalom egyik legnagyobb alakja 1972-ben születet az ohioi Zanesville-ben. Tinédzser korában kiváló baseball játékos volt, ezért ösztöndíjat nyert a Pennsylvania Egyetemre. Fogorvosi diplomát szerzett és New Yorkban kezdett praktizálni. Harminc éves korában azonban rájött, hogy nem boldog, ő író akar lenni. Első regényét a Betty Zane-t 1904-ben írta, de elsőre nem talált rá kiadót. Ekkor nyugatra költözött és folytatta az írást. Sorra jelentek meg regényei különösebb visszhang nélkül. 1910-ben érte el első komolyabb sikerét a "Sivatag öröksége" kiadásával. Ettől kezdve már befutott írónak számított és sorra megjelent könyvei sikert, sikerre halmoztak. Családjával a californiai Altadenába költözött, ahonnan minden évben kirándulásokat tett nyugatra, könyvei színhelyére és horgászni járt az Atlanti-óceánra. 1939-ben váratlanul szívrohamban hunyt el. Haláláig közel kilencven könyvet írt, többségében western-t, de kilenc könyvet horgászkalandjainak szentelt.
