Kultovní SF sága Duny, kterou mnozí znají z některé její filmové adaptace, se rodila nesnadno. Její první díl, román Duna, který později proslavil jednoho z dnes již klasiků SF literatury, Franka Herberta, vyšel v roce 1963 v časopise Analog pod názvem Svět Duny. Tehdy vyšla ovšem jen jeho část. Díky obrovskému ohlasu u čtenářů napsal autor vzápětí pokračování příběhu Prorok Duny. Pro knižní vydání (1965) obě části spojil a výstižně a stručně nazval Duna. Úspěch románu o pouštní planetě Arrakis a jejím pokladu stále rostl, hned v následujícím roce (1966) získal jak cenu Nebula, tak Hugo. Frank Herbert své dílo rozšiřoval a vytvořil tak předobraz nové epiky v žánru SF. V letech 1969 až 1981 vyšlo dalších pět pokračování ságy popisujících boje o ovládnutí Arrakisu. Až předčasná autorova smrt ukončila i osudy hrdinů ságy, jejichž pokračování však zůstalo otevřeno. Přesto jeho smrtí příběhy o Duně nekončí. Frankův syn Brian, spolu s dalším vynikajícím SF autorem Kevinem J. Andersonem (slavná Akta X), převzal jeho úkol a k neutuchající potěše příznivců a díky jejich zájmu rozšířil ságu o další díly.
