Opět se setkáváme s detektivem inspektorem Faradayem, fanatickým zastáncem spravedlnosti a čestných metod boje se zločinci. V osobním životě řeší problémy s hluchým synem, jehož od narození vychovává sám. Únik před krutou realitou hledá v pozorování ptactva, což je nádherně starosvětská záliba a jedna z mála činností, která ho sbližuje i se synem, jenž se usilovně snaží osamostatnit. Druhou význačnou postavu představuje detektiv Paul Wilson, který se řídí zásadou „účel světí prostředky“ a svoje netradiční způsoby pátrání a vyšetřování raději tají před nadřízenými. Značnou roli v příběhu hraje i válka v Iráku – děj se odehrává v roce 2003 a Hurley se nijak netají tím, že se přiklání na stranu odpůrců zmíněné války. Celá kniha tím dostává i širší historický rozměr.
