Pan Stevens byl celý život loajálním, oddaným, uctivým a pečlivým majordomem na Darlingtonském panství. Jeho pojetí svědomité služby má však za následek hradbu upjatosti, přes kterou si nikdy nedovolil projevit ani ty nejzákladnější city. Když jeho letitý zaměstnavatel prodá své sídlo zbohatlickým Američanům, pokusí se zrekapitulovat svůj život, který hrdě položil na oltář abstraktnímu ideálu, aniž by se dosud odvážil reflektovat, čemu to vlastně bez oddechu sloužil.
