Und es ist auch kein Meteor, der sich bedrohlich auf die Idylle einer typischen US-amerikanischen Kleinstadt namens Chester’s Mill senkt, wohl aber eine seltsame Kuppel, die Chester’s Mill umschließt – und die rund 2.000 Bewohner für den Leser unter das Brennglas des Horrors stellt. Ob es sich dabei um einen Angriff von Außerirdischen oder ein Menschenexperiment der Regierung handelt, bleibt im Dunkeln. Gerade will Dale „Barbie“ Barbara, Imbisskoch und Irak-Veteran, die Kleinstadt verlassen, da senkt sich die Kuppel wie eine Guillotine herunter und macht seine Ausreise unmöglich. Dann hält das Grauen Einzug in den Mikrokosmos – vor allem dank der Taten des skrupellosen Autohändlers und Provinzpolitikers „Big Jim“, der seine Mannen mordend durch die Gegend ziehen lässt, während die Außenwelt hilflos zusehen muss. Am Ende, als kaum mehr Erwachsene am Leben sind, liegt das Schicksal von Chester’s Mill und seiner wenigen Überlebenden in den Händen der Kinder... In einem Nachwort von Die Arena gibt Stephen King an, die Grundidee des Buchs – die Kuppel – schon vor dreißig Jahren gehabt zu haben. Vielleicht muss er das tun, denn immerhin lebte schon der erste Simpsons-Film (2007) von einem ähnlichen Einfall. Wie dem auch sei: Mit der Idee schafft King einen faszinierenden Mikrokosmos, der nicht zuletzt illustrieren soll, wie sehr sich die USA nach dem 9. September 2001 trotz der Wahl Barack Obamas (und seiner im Buch für 2012 prophezeiten Wiederwahl) verändert hat. Denn Die Arena ist auch ein politisches Buch, in dem der Terror und der Krieg gegen den Irak den Grundton bestimmt.
