Prvá súhrnná publikácia o Živene, spolku slovenských žien, vychádza pri príležitosti 150. výročia jej založenia. Predstavuje kľúčové i menej známe osobnosti spolku, jeho poslanie a bohatú kultúrnu a osvetovú činnosť od minulosti až po súčasnosť. Živena, najstarší slovenský ženský spolok, vznikol z iniciatívy mužov angažujúcich sa v slovenskom národnom hnutí v Rakúsko-Uhorsku v roku 1869. Zásluhou spolku sa v roku 1919 (po päťdesiatročnom úsilí) podarilo otvoriť prvú slovenskú vyššiu dievčenskú školu. Živena pomáhala ženám zo všetkých spoločenských vrstiev zmeniť život, ktorý im nevyhovoval - stať sa finančne nezávislou od muža, vedieť sa postarať sama o seba a svoje deti, odísť z nefunkčného manželstva, požadovať slušné zaobchádzanie na úradoch atď. Najväčší počet členov a členiek dosiahla v podmienkach demokratického Československa - v roku 1929 ich bolo štyritisíc. Živeniarky vyznávali a dodnes vyznávajú zásadu apolitickosti a nadkonfesijnosti: koncom tridsiatych rokov odolali nátlaku stať sa len spolkom evanjelických žien, v období vojnovej Slovenskej republiky zase odmietali vylúčiť zo svojich radov židovské ženy. V štyridsiatych a päťdesiatych rokoch vzdorovali obom totalitám 20. storočia, a keď sa u nás v roku 1989 začala obnova demokratického zriadenia, opäť dokázali osloviť mladé ženy moderným programom. V súčasnosti má spolok asi tisíc členiek a členov.
