KSČ již v meziválečném období patřila mezi nejsilnější politické strany v Československu. Po celou dobu existence první republiky představovala důležitou antisystémovou opozici. Vznikla v roce 1921 z plurality rozličných uskupení, v níž však levicová opozice uvnitř sociální demokracie hrála ústřední roli. Ve druhé polovině 20. let byla postupně pod tlakem Moskvy transformována do strany bolševického typu. Obměnila se i generačně, když do jejího vedení nastoupili tzv. karlínští kluci v čele s Klementem Gottwaldem. Teprve v roce 1935 s koncepcí tzv. lidové fronty nastoupila KSČ pozvolnou cestu ke státotvorné politice obrany země proti fašismu. Díky ní se do roku 1945 přeměnila ve všenárodní stranu apelující na všechny složky společnosti a vykračující vstříc monopolu moci.
