Oba se dívají na svět superhrdinů novým pohledem, oba ničí mýty a oba balancují na pokraji apokalypsy. Ale tam, kde Miller ještě nabízí pozitivního superhrdinu, tam už má Moore obyčejné lidi s neobyčejnými schopnostmi. Lidi někdy kruté, se svými úchylkami a tajnostmi, se špínou schovanou pod maskami. Ovšem lidi velmi mocné (a v jednom případě i všemocné). V roce 2009 byl natočen úspěšný film podle této komiksové předlohy.

Ale co by člověk neudělal pro vlast… Scéna: nerealisticky krásná a mírně přiopilá prostitutka jde ztemnělou ulicí a falešně si prozpěvuje dobovou písničku. Střih, stín muže s cylindrem na hlavě a kabelou v ruce, vržený na studenou, vlhkou zeď. Ona si všimne, že za ní někdo jde. Zrychlí krok, on také, to vše se na dlažebních kostkách dobře rozléhá. Prudce oddechující nevěstka uhne do postranní uličky, vrah za ní. Pak záběr na zvednutý nůž, její tvář, výkřik, vychlístne krev, třeba na plakát muzikálu. Roztmívačka, další záběr na policistu, jak vydechne: „Ach bože,“ a píská na píšťalku. Nuže, to je stereotyp Jacka Rozparovače, jak jej známe z filmu – a nic takového v Moorově románu nenajdeme. Moore nezakrývá, že smrt těch šlapek kdesi v postranní uličce byla hnusná, bídná a nezasloužená. Neumožňuje čtenářům uniknout do pohodlného hororového klišé, naopak, ukazuje příšernou a nepřikrášlenou pravdu. To by ale samo o sobě nestačilo. V románu není důležité, kdo je vrah (to ostatně víme od první stránky), ale jak a proč se to všechno stalo. A tak čtenář stejně jako detektiv Dirk Gently v knihách Douglase Adamse neřeší jen samotný případ, ale doslova celý svět, v němž ke zločinu došlo. Viktoriánský svět se všemi jeho klady a zápory, svět úžasného technického pokroku i ponižující bídy, svět královské rodiny, zbytnělé střední třídy a tajných společností, ovšem i svět nejubožejších z ubohých v londýnském East Endu. Podobně jako Ecovo Jméno růže lze román Z pekla číst několika způsoby: jako netradiční detektivku o královském spiknutí, jako beletrizovanou literaturu faktu (a že je Moorovo řešení Rozparovačova případu přesvědčivé) či jako strhující sociologickou črtu viktoriánské společnosti. Anebo jako portrét výjimečně vzdělaného sériového vraha. Není to četba pro každého. Vstupte pouze na vlastní nebezpečí…
