Kdo vraždí neškodné starce? Kdo se pokouší otrávit Patricije? V době, kdy podzimní mlhy sevřou město Ankh-Morpork do svých spárů, připadne Městské stráži nelehký úkol vystopovat neviditelného vraha. Možná, že něco vědí golemové, ale tihle vážní tvorové z hlíny, kteří pracují celé dny a noci a nikdy nikomu nezpůsobili ani ty nejmenší potíže, najednou začnou páchat sebevraždy. Ne že by Hlídka neměla dost svých vlastních problémů. Tak jsou tady například potíže s vlkodlačicí, která trpí pre-úplňkovou tenzí, desátníkem Nóblhóchem, jehož posedne noblesa a kamarádíčkuje se s hóch společností, a pak ten trpasličí nováček. Něco s ním není v pořádku. Je na něm každopádně něco divného. Když nic jiného, tak jeho náušnice a oční stíny. Komu se dá důvěřovat, když jsou ulice plné lidí, stíny plné spiklenců a všechny stopy ukazují špatným směrem? Vrchní velitel Hlídky sir Samuel Elánius zjistí, že pravda se vůbec nemusí ukrývat v pochmurných a temných ulicích nočního města.

Svobodnej národ
Na křídových pláních nazývaných Vysočina jsou čarodějky zakázané - ode dne, kdy v lesích zmizel baronův syn. Kromě toho, každá čarodějka ví, že křída je pro čarovaní nevhodná. Tonička Bolavá, s níž jsme se setkali už třikrát v předchozích dílech tetralogie, má tentokrát víc práce než obvykle. Starý baron Chumfurttam, o něhož se starala, zemřel. Je třeba najít mladého barona Rolanda v Ankh-Morporku. Tonička se pro něj vydá a její osobní strážci - Nac mac Fíglové - trvají na tom, že poletí s ní. Ti si ovšem své povinnosti jako vždycky vysvětlují po svém. Pak se objeví Úskočný muž, děsivý lovec čarodějek. Tonička se rychle vrací zpět do rodného kraje, kde je třeba připravit pohřeb starého a svatbu mladého barona, ale Úskočný muž ji pronásleduje. I když není sama - kromě pomoci, se kterou všichni počítají, se objeví i pomoc, kterou by opravdu nikdo z nás nečekal -, střetnutí bude těžké. Poslední díl příběhu by měl mít šťastný konec, ale znáte Terryho Pratchetta. Kdo ví?
