Tento román je fikcí, ale když jej čteme, podlehneme jeho vypravěčské přesvědčivosti, jako by šlo o popis skutečné události. Děj knihy se odehrává částečně v přítomnosti a částečně v nacistickém Německu. Začíná tak, že při potápěčském výzkumu poblíž pobřeží USA je nalezen vrak amerického bombardéru, jaké za světové války útočily na německá města, avšak jeho posádka je oblečena do stejnokrojů luftwaffe. Jak se postupně z velmi vzrušujícího děje dozvídáme, stroje se zmocnili nacisté a v roce 1945, když už měli válku prakticky prohranou, jej vyslali nad New York s atomovou pumou, kterou sestrojili a jejímž svržením chtěli Američany donutit k šokující kapitulaci. Sledujeme záměr nejvyšších velitelů třetí říše, snahu pilotů dostat se k cíli, úspěšný průběh této smrtonosné výpravy a..., další děj se asi nehodí prozrazovat, protože kniha je napínavá do poslední stránky, skvělým způsobem spojuje jednotlivé epizody v působivý celek a když ji dočteme, musíme si připustit, že něco podobného se doopravdy mohlo stát.
