Román Dítě číslo 44, zdařilý a oceňovaný debut mladého britského autora Toma Roba Smithe, vychází ze skutečného případu sériového vraha Andreje Čikatyla. Příslušník MGB Lev Děmidov pátrá po pachateli vražd dětí, ačkoli tím porušuje veškerá nařízení s vého úřadu, ruské tajné policie, a nakonec riskuje život. Thriller s reálným pozadím odehrávající se v Rusku na počátku 50. let nabízí kromě strhujícího kriminálního příběhu i děsivý obraz diktatury, která se drží u moci jen díky stupňovanému teroru.

Lev Demidov je dôstojník Ministerstva štátnej bezpečnosti, predchodcu neslávne známej tajnej polície KGB. Je síce charakterný a poctivý, no Stalinove politické praktiky z neho urobili chladného vykonávateľa rozkazov nadriadených. Tí mu pripomínajú, že v Sovietskom zväze bola odstránená každá forma vykorisťovania, preto v spoločnosti neexistuje zločin. Lev je ochotný uveriť tejto ilúzii, napriek tomu, že prenasleduje a trestá zradcov mladého štátu. Keď sa na železničnej trati v Moskve objaví telo mŕtveho chlapca, Demidova okamžite informujú, že ide o nehodu, nie o zločin. V tomto duchu a z pozície svojej moci presvedčí rodinu chlapca aj očitých svedkov, že zločin sa nestal. Postupne si však začína uvedomovať, že v `dokonalom` Rusku 50-tych rokov vyčíňa masový vrah, čo ho núti neposlúchnuť rozkaz a pokračovať vo vyšetrovaní.
