"Drakula vagyok; legyen üdvözölve házamban, Mr. Harker!" Ezekkel a szavakkal mutatkozik be Bram Stoker klasszikus történetében a gróf Jonathan Harkernek, az egyik főhősnek. A regényirodalom egyik leghíresebb bemutatkozását nemcsak az olvasók fújják bő évszázada - 1897-es angliai megjelenése óta a Drakulá-t nem győzik újranyomni -, de színpadi és filmszínészek is tucatszám. Lehetetlen úgy olvasni a semmi jót nem ígérő invitálást, hogy ne lássuk közben Lugosi Bélát, Christopher Lee-t vagy Gary Oldmant, vagy ne halljuk gondolatban egy súlyos várkapu nyikorgását. Drakula, aki beinvitál, rögtön felismerhető vékony sasorráról, "fennhéjázón öblös" homlokáról, főleg pedig "sajátságosan hegyes" fogairól, amik "kiálltak az ajkak közül, amelyeknek feltűnő pirossága ily élemedett korhoz képest megdöbbentő életerőt mutatott". Ekkor még nem tudja szegény Harker, hogy házigazdája nem szimpla baljós mágnás, hanem igazából egy négyszáz éves vámpír. Nem is sejti, miféle szörnyűséget szabadít ezzel a világra: a vámpír gróf ebben a nyugati metropolisban akar újabb áldozatokat szedni, újabb - élőhalott - segítőtársakat toborozni. Miközben Harker a romos várban senyvedve tervezi reménytelennek tűnő menekülését, Drakula kísértethajója máris Anglia felé közeleg, ahol két ártatlan fiatal nő készül a boldog házaséletre. Az egyik éppen Mina, Harker menyasszonya... Barátaiknak, egy ifjú angol és egy idős holland orvosdoktornak, egy angol főnemesnek és egy amerikai kalandornak minden bátorságukra és leleményességükre szükségük lesz, hogy elháríthassák ezt a pokoli támadást.
