A cím sokkal találóbb, mint az első volt: a regény véglegesre érlelt formájában több és más lett, mint aminek indult: a "toll- és ceruzavázlatok" laza sorozatából szigorú fegyelemmel szerkesztett nagy körképregény alakult a napóleoni háborúk korának Angliájáról, a humoros-szatirikus ábrázolás pedig az erkölcsi tanítás eszköze lett. Szülőhazájában is, de még inkább külföldön az olvasók tudatában a Hiúság Vására forr össze a legszorosabban W. M. Thackeray (1811-1863) nevével.
