Tolkienův Silmarillion popisuje První věk světa - jeho samozřejmou součástí je tedy vyprávění o vzniku Středozemě, o její mytologii, nejstarší historii a v neposlední řadě také o národech, jež ji obývaly v dobách předcházejících ději trilogie Pán prstenů. Název knihy je odvozen od jména tří vzácných klenotů, silmarilů, které zhotovil nejnadanější z elfů Fëanor. Úkolem těchto klenotů bylo uchovávat vzácné Světlo Dvou stromů blažené říše Valinoru. Všech silmarilů se však zmocnil Morgoth, první Temný pán, a v pevnosti Angband si jimi ozdobil svou železnou korunu. Fëanor a jeho druhové s ním vedli dlouhou válku, jejímž cílem bylo získat cenné klenoty zpět. Quenta Silmarillion (Historie silmarilů), ústřední část knihy odehrávající se v Prvním věku, je doplněna Ainulindalë (Hudbou Ainur), úvodním mýtem pojednávajícím o Stvoření světa v Hlubinách času, a Valaquentou (Zprávou o Valar), což je vyprávění o božských mocnostech Valar a Mainar a jejich temných protějšcích Sauronovi a Melkorovi.

Poslední díl audio verze knížky, jež položila základy moderní fantasy, přichází znovu na trojici CD. Nahrávka navazuje na dva předchozí komplety, Společenstvo Prstenu a Dvě věže. Kniha o Bilbových dobrodružstvách nás preto oveľa ľahšie vovedie do konštrukcie fiktívnej histórie Stredozeme a zoznámi nás s postavami, ktoré neskôr, v už spomínanej trilógii, zohrávajú dôležité úlohy. Těchto sedm esejů představuje Tolkiena jako literárního vědce, překladatele i romanopisce, a přestože vyvěrají z Tolkienova zájmu o středověkou literaturu, jsou přístupné všem čtenářům. Dva z nich pojednávají o Béowulfovi, jeden o Siru Gawainovi a Zeleném rytíři, najdeme zde přednášku o angličtině a velštině, projev, jímž se Tolkien roku 1953 loučil s Oxfordskou univerzitou, i pojednání o vymyšlených jazycích s příklady básní v elfských jazycích. Nejslavnější je však jeho esej O pohádkách, v němž se zamýšlí nad povahou pohádek a fantastických příběhů a dává nám nahlédnout, jak on sám k tomuto žánru přistupoval.
