Tolkienův Silmarillion popisuje První věk světa - jeho samozřejmou součástí je tedy vyprávění o vzniku Středozemě, o její mytologii, nejstarší historii a v neposlední řadě také o národech, jež ji obývaly v dobách předcházejících ději trilogie Pán prstenů. Název knihy je odvozen od jména tří vzácných klenotů, silmarilů, které zhotovil nejnadanější z elfů Fëanor. Úkolem těchto klenotů bylo uchovávat vzácné Světlo Dvou stromů blažené říše Valinoru. Všech silmarilů se však zmocnil Morgoth, první Temný pán, a v pevnosti Angband si jimi ozdobil svou železnou korunu. Fëanor a jeho druhové s ním vedli dlouhou válku, jejímž cílem bylo získat cenné klenoty zpět. Quenta Silmarillion (Historie silmarilů), ústřední část knihy odehrávající se v Prvním věku, je doplněna Ainulindalë (Hudbou Ainur), úvodním mýtem pojednávajícím o Stvoření světa v Hlubinách času, a Valaquentou (Zprávou o Valar), což je vyprávění o božských mocnostech Valar a Mainar a jejich temných protějšcích Sauronovi a Melkorovi.
