Andy Warhol - Prints
"I'm for mechanical art," said Andy Warhol (1928-87). "When I took up silkscreening, it was to more fully exploit the preconceived image through commercial techniques of multiple reproduction." Printmaking was a vital artistic practice for Warhol. Prints figure prominently throughout his career from his earliest work as a commercial illustrator in the 1950s to the collaborative silkscreens made in the Factory during the 1960s and the commissioned portfolios of his final years. In their fascination with popular culture and provocative subverting of the difference between original and copy, Warhol's prints are recognized now as a prescient forerunner of today's hyper-sophisticated, hyper-saturated and hyper-accelerated visual culture. Andy Warhol: Prints, published to accompany a major exhibition at the Portland Art Museum--the largest of its kind ever to be presented--includes approximately 250 of Warhol's prints and ephemera from the collection of Jordan D. Schnitzer, including iconic silkscreen prints of Campbell's soup cans and Marilyn Monroe. Organized chronologically and by series, Andy Warhol: Prints establishes the range of Warhol's innovative graphic production as it evolved over the course of four decades, with a particular focus on Warhol's use of different printmaking techniques, beginning with illustrated books and ending with screen printing.

Fabulous Frocks
No item of clothing has endured for longer than the dress. Yet the last century alone has seen the most radical changes of style--hemlines swinging from ankle to thigh, outlines alternating between the body-hugging and the bell--and our fascination w
ith the frock has not gone away. From Gres' draping to Dior's New Look, from Mary Quant's mini to Hussein Chalayan's mechanical marvels, this book looks at the dress in 20th-century fashion. Thematic chapters--Changes, Feminine, Sex, Must-Haves, Fant
asy, Classical, and Art--set out the inspirations and implications for each new change alongside the stunning photography. It has been more than 80 years since Coco Chanel invented the little black dress, but most women still have one in their wardro
bes today. It's been decades since women discovered trousers and separates, but many women dream of wearing a glorious, glamorous gown at least once, whether it's on a Hollywood red carpet, or on her wedding day.

Andy Warhol the Early Sixties
After a successful career in advertising design, Andy Warhol (1928-1987) change course to pursue a career in art. His concerns, however, did not change, remaining centered on the world of consumerism and mass production. This publication illuminates Warhol's early years as a painter and producer of drawings, from 1961 to 1964. During this period, Warhol gradually replaced his somewhat individualized visual language with purely media-derived (and therefore collective) subject matter, and developed the mechanical painting process of silkscreening on canvas for which he became so well known. This fascinating process--in essence the gestation of Pop art--is examined here through several series, such as the Campbell's soup can paintings and the Dollar Bills, the star series of Elvis and Liz, the Death and Disaster pictures and the Flowers series from 1964. By concentrating on Warhol's early years, this publication makes it possible to comprehend the scope of his impact.

Leonardo
One of the most accomplished human beings who ever lived, Leonardo remains the quintessential Renaissance genius. Creator of the world's most famous painting, this scientist, artist, philosopher, inventor, builder, and mechanic epitomized the great flowering of human consciousness that marks his era. And yet, so wide-ranging and prolific were his interests that he brought hardly any major undertaking to a final end. In his thousands of notes and sketches, Leonardo would not only demonstrate his graphic genius but also anticipate some of the great discoveries and inventions that would follow him, from key points in anatomy - such as the principles behind blood circulation - through to plans for armoured military vehicles, planes, helicopters and submarines. Leonardo also advanced numerous artistic techniques, achieving a complex psychology in such paintings as The Last Supper and the enigmatic La Gioconda, or Mona Lisa, which continue to mesmerize visitors from around the world to this day.
Einsteins Greatest Mistake
Widely considered the greatest genius of all time, Albert Einstein revolutionised our understanding of the cosmos with his general theory of relativity and helped to lead us into the atomic age. Yet in the final decades of his life he was also ignored by most working scientists, his ideas opposed by even his closest friends. This stunning downfall can be traced to Einstein's earliest successes and to personal qualities that were at first his best assets. Einstein's imagination and self-confidence served him well as he sought to reveal the universe's structure, but when it came to newer revelations in the field of quantum mechanics, these same traits undermined his quest for the ultimate truth. David Bodanis traces the arc of Einstein's intellectual development across his professional and personal life, showing how Einstein's confidence in his own powers of intuition proved to be both his greatest strength and his ultimate undoing. He was a fallible genius. An intimate and enlightening biography of the celebrated physicist, Einstein's Greatest Mistake reveals how much we owe Einstein today - and how much more he might have achieved if not for his all-too-human flaws.

Paul Klee - Irony at Work
Offering a fresh look at one of the major artists of the 20th century, this book illustrates how Paul Klee s critical and ironic take on life was evident in every stage of his oeuvre. Known for its whimsy and levity, Paul Klee s art is often considered gleefully childlike. This groundbreaking volume argues that Klee s style emerged from a philosophical school that originated with early German Romanticism and consisted of perpetual shifts between satire and affirmation of the absolute, finite and infinite, and real and ideal. Featuring approximately 250 works, this careful appreciation of Klee connects each stage of his career to the larger philosophical context. Exploring the satires and caricatures of Klee s youth, his experimentations in Cubism and mechanical theater, and the constructivist approach of the Bauhaus school, this book follows the trajectory of Klee s oeuvre as a reflection of prevailing styles. It closes with the artist s final years, in which he was labeled a degenerate artist by the Nazi regime and struggled with illness. Viewed through the many facets of irony as a complex theme, and against the backdrop of Europe s seismic political and artistic movements, Klee s body of work takes on a renewed significance as one of the most critical of its generation."

Treasures of Habsburgs
The House of Habsburg was one of the wealthiest dynasties in Europe, and many of its members were also great collectors and patrons of the arts. Their love of magnificence is reflected in the quality and diversity of the objects in Viennas Kunstkammer, one of the most important collections of decorative arts in the world. This book features around 150 of the masterpieces from the Habsburg collections, ranging from sublime works of sculpture and fine metalwork to exotic objects fashioned from ostrich eggs, nautilus shells, rhinoceros horns and sharks teeth. Alongside the Saliera, Benvenuto Cellinis famous golden salt cellar, and the High Gothic sculpture known as the Krumau Madonna, are extraordinarily delicate works carved from ivory, gorgeous tapestries and mechanical marvels. The emperors, princes and archdukes who shaped these collections wanted not only to create a sense of wonder in all who gazed upon them but also to symbolize their own dominion over the world. Filled with lavish photographs and fascinating insights, this is a worthy tribute to the Habsburgs and their lasting artistic legacy.

Spitfire A Very British Love Story
The perfect complementary narrative to the bestselling memoir by Geoffrey Wellum - First Light.
Achtung, Spitfire!
The iconic Spitfire found fame during the darkest early days of World War II. But what happened to the redoubtable fighter and its crews beyond the Battle of Britain, and why is it still so loved today?
In late spring 1940, Nazi Germany's domination of Europe had looked unstoppable. With the British Isles in easy reach since the fall of France, Adolf Hitler was convinced that Great Britain would be defeated in the skies over her southern coast, confident his Messerschmitts and Heinkels would outclass anything the Royal Air Force threw at them. What Hitler hadn't planned for was the agility and resilience of a marvel of British engineering that would quickly pass into legend - the Spitfire.
Bestselling author John Nichol's passionate portrait of this magnificent fighter aircraft, its many innovations and updates, and the people who flew and loved them, carries the reader beyond the dogfights over Kent and Sussex. Spanning the full global reach of the Spitfire's deployment during WWII, from Malta to North Africa and the Far East, then over the D-Day beaches, it is always accessible, effortlessly entertaining and full of extraordinary spirit.
Here are edge-of-the-seat stories and heart-stopping first-hand accounts of battling pilots forced to bail out over occupied territory; of sacrifice and wartime love; of aristocratic female flyers, and of the mechanics who braved the Nazi onslaught to keep the aircraft in battle-ready condition. Nichol takes the reader on a hair-raising, nail-biting and moving wartime history of the iconic Spitfire populated by a cast of redoubtable, heroic characters that make you want to stand up and cheer.

Elastic
From the best-selling author of Subliminal and The Drunkard's Walk, a groundbreaking new look at the neuroscience of change—and how elastic thinking can help us thrive in a world changing faster than ever before.
With rapid technological innovation leading the charge, today’s world is transforming itself at an extraordinary and unprecedented pace. As jobs become more multifaceted, as information streams multiply, and as myriad devices place increasing demands on our attention, we are confronted every day with a plethora of new challenges. Fortunately, as Leonard Mlodinow shows, the human brain is uniquely engineered to adapt.
Drawing from cutting-edge research in neuroscience and psychology, Mlodinow takes us on a fascinating and illuminating journey through the mechanics of our own minds as we navigate the rapidly shifting landscapes around us. Out of the exploratory instincts that allowed our ancestors to prosper hundreds of thousands of years ago, humans developed a cognitive style that Mlodinow terms elastic thinking, a collection of traits and abilities that include neophilia (an affinity for novelty), schizotypy (a tendency toward unusual perception), imagination and idea generation, pattern recognition, mental fluency, divergent thinking, and integrative thinking. These are the qualities that enabled innovators from Mary Shelley to Miles Davis, from the inventor of jumbo-sized popcorn to the creator of the modern grocery store, and from Nike to Pokemon Go to effect paradigm shifts in our culture and society. And they’re the qualities that will enable each of us to succeed, personally and professionally, in the radically changing environments of today.
With his keen acumen and rapid-fire wit, Mlodinow gives us the essential tools to harness the power of elastic thinking in an endlessly dynamic world.

Detail in Contemporary Bar and Restaurant
Bars and restaurants need to be assertive. Customers tend not to visit them to satisfy basic appetites for food or drink but for the social opportunities. Their interiors need to occupy the imagination of their customers and to whet the appetite for a return visit. The design that gets the formula right will do as much to prolong the life of the business as the products on offer. As this book demonstrates, the conventions and mechanics of eating and drinking influence how bars and restaurants are conceived in different regions of the world. Whatever the final result users are in sustained, intimate contact with the elements of the space they inhabit and detailing must be refined enough, and visually rich enough, to withstand prolonged scrutiny. This book includes a wide range of international projects and for each one there is a descriptive text, colour photographs, floor plans, sections and construction and decorative details. A bonus CD-ROM contains all the drawings as printed in the book, in both EPS and DWG (generic CAD) formats.
