Picturing People
Figurative art is currently riding high. Contemporary works depicting the human form grace the walls of public institutions and commercial galleries alike. Champions of paint, such as Katherine Bernhardt and Adrian Ghenie; photographic artists, such as Gillian Wearing and Cindy Sherman; Charles Avery's drawings, Grayson Perry's tapestries and Kara Walker's silhouettes - these and many other artists from diverse backgrounds are working in a range of media to explore new ways to depict the human form. Charlotte Mullins explores the reasons behind this resurgence and considers what the figure means to the artists who depict it in their practice. Her accessible yet highly perceptive introduction includes works by 70 artists, all created in the past five years. These artists successfully employ the figure to help make sense of the mercurial, fast-paced and challenging world we live in.

Natural Born Heroes: The Lost Secrets of Strength and Endurance
When Chris McDougall stumbled across the story of Churchill's 'dirty tricksters', a motley crew of English poets and academics who helped resist the Nazi invasion of Crete, he knew he was on the track of something special. To beat the odds, the tricksters - starving, aging, outnumbered -tapped into an ancient style of fitness: the lost art of heroism. They listened to their instincts, replaced calories with stored bodily fat and used their fascia, the network of tissue which criss-crosses the body, to catapult themselves to superhuman strength and endurance. Soon McDougall was in the middle of a modern fitness revolution taking place everywhere from Parisian parkour routes to state-of-the-art laboratories, and based on the know-how of Shanghai street-fighters and Wild West gunslingers. Just as Born to Run got runners off the treadmill and into nature, Natural Born Heroes will inspire casual athletes to dump the gym membership for cross-training, mud runs and free-running.

New York Is...
What is New York in the eyes of artists? This engaging book from the Metropolitan Museum of Art offers myriad answers to that question, pairing selected works in the museum's collection with simple, concise observations. The Flatiron Building is shape; the Empire State Building is line. Washington Square Park is joyous; Times Square is spectacle. Among the enduring images are paintings by Edward Hopper, Stuart Davis, Winslow Homer, Jacob Lawrence and Charles Demuth; photographs by Walker Evans, Berenice Abbott, Alfred Stieglitz, Garry Winogrand and Cindy Sherman and drawings, lithograph and posters. It's the summer of 1969, and the shock of conflict reverberates through the youth of America, both at home and abroad. As a student at a quiet college campus in the heartland of Indiana, Terry Ives couldn't be farther from the front lines of Vietnam or the incendiary protests in Washington.

When word gets around about an important government experiment in the small town of Hawkins, she signs on as a test subject for the project, code-named MKULTRA. Suicide Squad The Rebirth Deluxe 2
There's something rotten in Belle Reve Penitentiary, and it's not just the swamp water leaking into the basement. Someone in the Suicide Squad has turned traitor, leaving America's deadliest super-team open to attack from a vast international conspiracy bent on destroying everything that Task Force X director Amanda Waller has built.
Considering that "The Wall" relies less on loyalty and trust and more on brain-implanted bombs to control her crew of conscripts, finding the culprit is going to be a tall order. Any one of the rogues in this gallery--including Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Enchantress and Killer Croc--would almost certainly climb over a pile of their teammates' corpses for the chance to escape.
But even when she's down for the count, Waller has a few aces up her sleeve, including 1) the deranged Kryptonian war criminal, General Zod, and 2) her own unequaled, bloody-minded ruthlessness.
Bending Zod to her will, however, means striking a bargain with one of Superman's deadliest enemies--and one of the only people on the planet smarter and more tenacious than Waller herself. But no matter how powerful the leverage she finds to use against him, in the end Zod kneels for no one. Will Waller's plan to make this living weapon of mass destruction a full-fledged member of the Suicide Squad live up to its enormous potential? Or will it literally and figuratively blow up in her face?
Acclaimed author Rob Williams is joined by artists John Romita Jr., Tony S. Daniel, Riley Rossmo, Giuseppe Cafaro and Stjepan Sejic in Suicide Squad: Rebirth Deluxe Edition Book 2. Collects Suicide Squad #9-20 as well as the one-shot Suicide Squad Special: War Crimes, written by the Squad's own original gangster, John Ostrander!

We - A Manifesto For Women Everywhere
Imagine a sisterhood - across all creeds and cultures. An unspoken agreement that we, as women, will support and encourage one another. That we will remember we don't know what struggles each of us may be facing elsewhere in our lives and so we will assume that each of us is doing our best...So begins WE: an inspiring, empowering and provocative manifesto for change. Change which we can all effect, one woman at a time. Change which provides a crucial and timely antidote to the 'have-it-all' Superwoman culture and instead focusses on what will make each and every one of us happier and more free. Change which provides an answer to the nagging sense of 'is that it?' that almost all of us can succumb to when we wake in the dead of night. Written by actress Gillian Anderson and journalist Jennifer Nadel - two friends who for the last decade have stumbled along together, learning, failing, crying, laughing and trying again - WE is a not a theoretical treatise but instead a rallying cry to create a life that has greater meaning and purpose. Combining tools which are practical, psychological and spiritual, it is both a process and a vision for a more fulfilling way of living. And a truly inspiring vision of a happier, more emotionally rewarding future we can all create together...

Art Since 1989
The years since 1989 have seen a complete untethering of what art can be, who makes it and where it can be found, which has been matched by a reassessment of art's appropriate place in society and the financial value that should be attached to it. In this new book in the World of Art series, Kelly Grovier surveys the dynamic developments in art practice worldwide since 1989, going in search of those artists who have undertaken to shape a fresh visual vocabulary and whose work reflects on these turbulent years. The book's ten chapters examine the key themes in contemporary art, from portraiture in the age of face transplants and facial recognition software, to political activism, science and religion. Artists discussed include Jeff Koons, Louise Bourgeois, Damien Hirst, George Condo, Marlene Dumas, Sean Scully, Cindy Sherman, Banksy, Ai Weiwei, Antony Gormley, Christo and Jean-Claude, Jenny Holzer, Chuck Close and Cornelia Parker. The final chapter, a timeline, traces the evolution of art practice in this period by looking closely at one key artwork from each year.

Bravo Two Zero
In January 1991, eight members of the SAS regiment embarked upon a top secret mission that was to infiltrate them deep behind enemy lines. Under the command of Sergeant Andy McNab, they were to sever the underground communication link between Baghdad and north-west Iraq, and to seek and destroy mobile Scud launchers. Their call sign: BRAVO TWO ZERO. Each man laden with 15 stone of equipment, they patrolled 20km across flat desert to reach their objective. Within days, their location was compromised. After a fierce fire fight, they were forced to escape and evade on foot to the Syrian border. In the desperate action that followed, though stricken by hypothermia and other injuries, the patrol 'went ballistic'. Four men were captured. Three died. Only one escaped. For the survivors, however, the worst ordeals were to come. Delivered to Baghdad, they were tortured with a savagery for which not even their intensive SAS training had prepared them. "Bravo Two Zero" is a breathtaking account of Special Forces soldiering: a chronicle of superhuman courage, endurance and dark humour in the face of overwhelming odds.

Seeing Ourselves
This richly diverse exploration of female artists and self-portraits is a brilliant and poignant demonstration of originality in works of haunting variety. The two earliest self-portraits come from 12th-century illuminated manuscripts in which nuns gaze at us across eight centuries. In 16th-century Italy, Sofonisba Anguissola paints one of the longest series of self-portraits, spanning adolescence to old age. In 17th-century Holland, Judith Leyster shows herself at the easel as a relaxed, self-assured professional. In the 18th century, artists from Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun to Angelica Kauffman express both passion for their craft and the idea of femininity; and in the 19th the salons and art schools at last open their doors to a host of talented women artists, including Berthe Morisot, ushering in a new and resonant self-confidence. The modern period demolishes taboos: Alice Neel painting herself nude at eighty, Frida Kahlo rendering physical pain, Cindy Sherman exploring identity, Marlene Dumas dispensing with all boundaries. The full verve of Frances Borzello's enthralling text, and the hypnotic intensity of the accompanying self-portraits, is revealed to the full in a completely revised edition of this inspiring book.

Self - portrait photography
SelfPortraiture has long been one of the most important genres in fine art, and as photographers like Cindy Sherman and Nan Goldin demonstrate, offers unique possibilities for the creative photographer, too. The digital age and in particular, the photosharing site flickr has opened up the field, throwing up a generation of talents who, in presenting images of themselves to the world, offer new ways of seeing oneself. Foremost among these is Natalie Miss Aniela Dybisz. In Self-Portrait Photography, the only book of its kind, she offers a wealth of practical expertise and conceptual finesse. Her startlingly original work is deconstructed: she offers stepbystep worked examples of how unique effects were achieved, and other leading photographers in the genre profile themselves and their work too, all adding up to introducing a wealth of inspirational and technical ideas for todays digital photographer. Photographers at all levels will be inspired to take another look at the model closest to hand themselves.
