A nagy kérdés: mit érd
emes túlélni?

Around the World
This modern atlas presents our world in striking images and clear texts. The book is not just for graphic designers, but also for anyone who is curious about how we live today. Looking through an atlas has always been a fascinating way to explore the world. Around the World is a contemporary evolution of an atlas tailored to our information age that takes its readers around the globe in 288 pages. In this book, compelling information graphics illustrate how natural and manmade phenomena impact our lives. They take us on an entertaining and informative journey that gives us a deeper understanding not only of our planet's geography, but also of the key local and global developments of the twenty-first century. Alongside classic facts about nature, history, population, culture, and politics, Around the World's eye-catching information graphics clearly explain complex processes such as global trade and evolving demographics. The book gives added insight into our modern world through its visual exploration of topics such as the changing speed of travel. Around the World alternates between providing information on general subjects such as families, languages, life expectancies, natural disasters, eating habits, economies, prosperity gaps, or religions, and providing more specific details about hobbies, coffee consumption, overfishing, soccer, and internet providers. The book also depicts events that have left indelible marks on our collective conscience including September 11, the Olympic Games, Japan's Fukushima disaster, and the sinking of the Titanic. Like any atlas, Around the World cannot claim to be a complete record. Rather, it serves as a rich cornucopia of information about local peculiarities of global relevance that bring home the little differences --as well as the astoundingly large similarities--among the citizens of the world. Enthralling, attractive, and informative, Around the World's international collection of illustrations and information graphics is for anyone who is curious about our planet and the people who live on it.

Telling Stories
"Telling Stories" by Tim Burgess of The Charlatans is one of the decade's most revealing rock books. "Clear, honest. An unusually frank and well-written rock memoir". ("The Times"). The Charlatans. Madchester. Britpop. Taking on the world. Here are the highs, the lows, the joys, the agonies, and the stories of what it's like to be in a rock band, as told by front man and survivor, Tim Burgess. "Like the best bits of every cautionary rock star tale ...there is armed robbery and smuggling. There's serious fraud. There are near and actual death experiences, divorce, industrial cocaine consumption and magnificent cameos from Madonna, Alan McGee, Ronnie Wood, Joe Strummer, LA drug dealer Harry The Dog, and Joaquin Phoenix. A minor classic". ("Q"). For readers who enjoyed "Life" by Keith Richards and "Bit of a Blur" by Alex James, "Telling Stories" is one of the finest music books of recent times. It's a story of achievement and survival, from London to LA. "A vivid read". ("Independent on Sunday"). "The Charlatans' frontman recalls the heyday of Britpop and Madchester with endearing exuberance. He's unflinchingly honest about the bad times but also peppers his story with anecdotal nuggets about the pitfalls of rock 'n' roll excess". ("Metro"). "Burgess keeps a level head, a sharp eye and a nice turn of phrase". ("Independent"). "Written with the stylish flow of a novel - light and dark, hilarious and melancholic". (Emma Forrest). "For a man whose behaviour borders on the suicidal, Timothy Burgess, the people's friend, is what you call a life enthusiast. He is also mad. It's a much-abused word, mad ...but he really is proper coo-ee clouds pan-dimensional mad mad". (Syliva Patteerson, "Sky"). Tim Burgess was born in Salford but grew up in a village near Northwich, Cheshire. Leaving school at 16 to work at ICI, his real love was music and soon afterwards he was invited to join new band The Charlatans. For twelve years Burgess lived in Los Angeles but he has recently returned to the UK.

Beowulf
The translation of Beowulf by J.R.R. Tolkien was an early work, very distinctive in its mode, completed in 1926: he returned to it later to make hasty corrections, but seems never to have considered its publication. This edition is twofold, for there exists an illuminating commentary on the text of the poem by the translator himself, in the written form of a series of lectures given at Oxford in the 1930s; and from these lectures a substantial selection has been made, to form also a commentary on the translation in this book. From his creative attention to detail in these lectures there arises a sense of the immediacy and clarity of his vision. It is as if he entered into the imagined past: standing beside Beowulf and his men shaking out their mail-shirts as they beached their ship on the coast of Denmark, listening to the rising anger of Beowulf at the taunting of Unferth, or looking up in amazement at Grendel's terrible hand set under the roof of Heorot. But the commentary in this book includes also much from those lectures in which, while always anchored in the text, he expressed his wider perceptions. He looks closely at the dragon that would slay Beowulf 'snuffling in baffled rage and injured greed when he discovers the theft of the cup'; but he rebuts the notion that this is 'a mere treasure story', 'just another dragon tale'. He turns to the lines that tell of the burying of the golden things long ago, and observes that it is 'the feeling for the treasure itself, this sad history' that raises it to another level. 'The whole thing is sombre, tragic, sinister, curiously real. The "treasure" is not just some lucky wealth that will enable the finder to have a good time, or marry the princess. It is laden with history, leading back into the dark heathen ages beyond the memory of song, but not beyond the reach of imagination.' Sellic Spell, a 'marvellous tale', is a story written by Tolkien suggesting what might have been the form and style of an Old English folk-tale of Beowulf, in which there was no association with the 'historical legends' of the Northern kingdoms.

And the Ass Saw the Angel
And the Ass Saw the Angel - Nick Cave's classic Gothic novel, in its full and original form. Outcast, mute, a lone twin cut from a drunk mother in a shack full of junk, Euchrid Eucrow of Ukulore inhabits a nightmarish Southern valley of preachers and
prophets, incest and ignorance. When the God-fearing folk of the town declare a foundling child to be chosen by the Almighty, Euchrid is disturbed. He sees her very differently, and his conviction, and increasing isolation and insanity, may have terrible consequences for them both...In 2009 Cave released a cut-down version of his novel but this reissue restores the full uncut text, as first published in 1989. Compelling and astonishing in its baroque richness, Nick Cave's acclaimed first novel is a fantastic journey into the twisted world of Deep Southern Gothic tragedy. This book will be adored by readers of Will Self, William Faulkner and Falnnery O'Connor, as well as fans of the cult rock star everywhere. "An explosion of linguistic bri
o and Gothic grotesquery, horrifying, funny and tragic". (Michel Faber, Guardian). "As if a Faulkner novel had been crossed with Whistle down the Wind and then narrated by a stoned blues musician ...heady". (Daily Telegraph). Nick Cave was born in Australia in 1957. He moved to London with his band The Birthday Party in 1990 and four years later he formed The Bad Seeds, with whom he has made 15 studio albums. In recent years he has made two albums with his other band, Grinderman. In 1999 he curated and directed the Meltdown Festival at London's South Bank Centre. He has also written the soundtrack for a number of successful films including The Assassination of Jesse James, Lawless and The Proposition. His novel And the Ass Saw the Angel was an international bestseller, Time Out's Book of the Year, and was reissued in the Penguin Essential series. His second novel The Death of Bunny Monroe was published in 2009. He lives in Brighton with his wife and two children.

Hell´s Angels (Penguin Essentials)
Journalist, maverick, rebel and author of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" Hunter S. Thompson offers another novel of American counterculture in Hell's Angels, beautifully repackaged as part of the Penguin Essentials range. 'A phalanx of motorcycles came roaring over the hill from the west...the noise was like a landslide, or a wing of bombers passing over. Even knowing the Angels I couldn't quite handle what I was seeing. It was like Genghis Khan, Morgan's Raiders, the Wild One and the Rape of Nanking all at once.' In September, 1964 a cavalcade of motorbikes ripped through the city of Monterey, California. It was a trip destined to make Hell's Angels household names across America, infamous for their violent, drunken rampages and feared for the destruction left in their wake. Enter Hunter S. Thompson, the master of counter-culture journalism who alone had the ability and stature to ride with the Angels on their terms. In this brilliant and hair-raising expose, he journeys with the last outlaws of the American frontier. A mixture of journalism, story-telling and sheer bravado, Hell's Angels is Hunter S. Thompson at full throttle. "Excellent documentary non-fiction". ("Time Out"). "The maverick voice of American counterculture". ("Guardian"). "There are only two adjectives writers care about any more - "brilliant" and "outrageous" - and Hunter has a freehold on both of them". (Tom Wolfe). "The book that made Thompson's name". ("Loaded"). Hunter S. Thompson was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1937. He began his writing career as a sports columnist in Florida and went on to work on newspapers and magazines in New York, San Juan and Rio de Janeiro. His articles appeared in Esquire, "Rolling Stone" magazine and the "San Francisco Chronicle". He is the author of a number of books, including "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72", "The Great Shark Hunt", "Generation of Swine", "The Curse of Lono", "Songs of the Doomed", "Better Than Sex", "The Proud Highway" and "The Rum Diary". Hunter S. Thompson died in 2005.

Coraline: Graphic Novel
Despite being mostly known for his fantastical graphic novels and adult fiction, Neil Gaiman's first book for children is everything that you would expect from such a massive imagination as his. It's special and wonderful and very weird indeed. Descr
ibed by some as the new Alice in Wonderland, Coraline is actually more bizarre than that, much more frightening and its modest length definitely adds to the book's undiluted potency. Shortly after moving into an old house with strange tenants above a
nd below, Coraline discovers a big, carved, brown wooden door at the far corner of the drawing room. And it is locked. Curiosity runs riot in Coraline's mind and she unlocks the door to see what lies behind it. Disappointingly, it opens onto a brick
wall. Days later, after exploring the rest of the house and garden, Coraline returns to the same mysterious door and opens it again. This time, however, there is a dark hallway in front of her. Stepping inside, the place beyond has an eerie familiari
ty about it. The carpet and wallpaper are the same as in her flat. The picture hanging on the wall is the same. Almost. Strangest of all, her mum and dad are there too. Only they have buttons for eyes and seem more possessive than normal. It's a twis
ted version of her world that is familiar, and yet sinister. And matters get even more surreal for Coraline when her "other" parents seem reluctant to let her leave. Her attempted escape from this nightmare alternative reality sees Coraline experienc
e a chilling series of ever more bizarre encounters. Some are plainly odd, others disturbingly spooky and together they combine to form an immensely readable story. It's like all the best bits of the Goosebumps books condensed into 160 pages. A uniqu
e reading experience guaranteed. (Ages 10 and over)--John McLay--This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
The Giving Tree
"The Giving Tree" is a classic and moving story by Shel Silverstein. Once there was a little tree ...and she loved a little boy. So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein. Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk ...and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave. This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein has created a moving parable for readers of all ages that offers an affecting interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return. Shel Silverstein's very first children's book "Lafcadio", the "Lion Who Shot Back" was published in 1963, and followed the next year by two other books. The first of those, "The Giving Tree", is a moving story about the love of a tree for a boy; it took four years before Harper Children's books decided to publish it. Shel returned to humour that same year with "A Giraffe and a Half". His first collection of poems and drawings, "Where the Sidewalk Ends", appeared in 1974, and his second, "A Light in the Attic", in 1981. When he was a G.I. in Japan and Korea in the 1950, he learned to play the guitar and to write songs, including "A Boy Named Sue" for Johnny Cash. In 1984, Silverstein won a Grammy Award for Best Children's Album for "Where the Sidewalk Ends" - 'recited, sung and shouted' by the author. He was also an accomplished playwright, including the 1981 hit, "The Lady or the Tiger Show". The last book to be published before he died in 1999, was "Falling Up" (1996).

Lacná kniha Apám a halálomat akarja
